We know that education is a complex process, even though it has evolved for centuries; it is a challenge to teach facts coming from cultural contexts alien to ours. An effective solution to help the easy understanding of topics with contexts unknown for the audience, such as theological truths, is the pedagogical narrative. In the feature article " The Christian Story and Our Stories: Narrative Pedagogy in Congregation Life" author Benjamin D. Espinoza (AGREGAR PLACE AND DATE OF PUBLICATION) explains the educational strategy of narrative pedagogy, its characteristics and creative ways to apply it effectively in religious and secular areas in our life. First, narrative pedagogy is an approach to teaching that involves life stories through creative …show more content…
In this way, narrative pedagogy can act as a past-redeemer. Human beings tend to remember negative experiences more than positive ones. To improve one’s attitude, the Christian narrative pedagogy aims to connect biblical stories to negative past experiences. The Bible has a personal influence in different times and cultures because of its genre. Giving a new approach one can see the harmful experiences being focused on the learning from an event, in order to have a different meaning of past events, and changes opinions, contexts and feelings. So, to change one’s past is to change one’s present and …show more content…
Music has notable advantages over writing to communicate ideas and feelings. It works actively with many senses and at the same time, it can motivate more to the spectator. In the Christian context, narrative pedagogy can involve music, using the worship to praise, and sharing the narrative between the musicians and the audience.
“The most applicable to Christian education ministry is teaching through narrative” (441). From a pedagogical point of view, narrative pedagogy should be applied depending on the audience. For example, showing a biblical truth to a child requires attractive elements for them like fables, poems, drawings, songs, or children's stories. To present the same biblical truth to adults requires different strategies like questions to reflect or analyzing a Bible verse.
In summary, narrative pedagogy connects the personal life with the topic to learn, and thus, it can develop the interest of the audience, both collectively and personally. “The possibilities of narrative pedagogy abound, and educators must use their imagination in order to create effective narrative pedagogies in their particular context” (442). Narrative pedagogy is a useful tool, that a Christian can use to fulfill God's plan to evangelize
Perhaps one of the most defining characteristics of Christianity comes from Christians’ view of life as a journey. Jesus’s life, the standard for Christian living, ended up as a journey to the cross. Full of pain, these journeys offer solace in the hope of a happy ending, although uncertainty and pain lie between the believer and the end of the journey. Journeying home often becomes the main purpose of Christian journeys, while journeying from pain serves as an escape from unhealthy life experiences for Christians. However, the thirst for earthly desires and knowledge sometimes becomes a stumbling block for Christians.
Each of who is seeking new life shed on them. Whether they are searching Christ or not, they are undoubtedly searching for and absence or void in their lives to be filled. Thus sets the plot for this work that guides readers on a journey to what it means to tell the truth and
Chapter One: My Story In the very beginning of this book, the author, Josh Dowel, relates a story from his childhood in which he couldn’t find satisfaction from his church, and thereby abandoned attending church. He quotes a country saying “when something doesn’t work, get rid of it” as a way of explaining his attitude toward church, and consequently, religion. Later in this chapter, Dowel explains a revelation which led him to once again explore Christianity. He realized a valuable truth: Jesus Christ and religion are two separate entities.
Each day we are faced with the opportunity to believe and tell many stories. when you were younger you were probably told stories about Saint Nick, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy. As a kid, these stories serve a purpose to teach something and to give hope. As adults the stories ease the pain of a subject or to get us through a hard time. An example might be a mother that has lost a son in a tragic accident will never be told by the doctor that her son died in pain, but the doctor might say he died peacefully.
Edwards mastered the use of imagery and Biblical allusion in his sermons to invoke emotion and pull on the heart strings of his listeners. His use of imagery can be broken down into three major categories: figurative language to thoroughly describe his idea, emotional appeal to cause intense feelings in the minds and hearts of his audience, and logical appeal to make distinct comparisons to the Bible; Edwards masterfully combined these techniques in this sermon to
In Thomas Long’s The Witness of Preaching, he aims to urge the reader to become a reliable witness of the gospel by way of ample preparation before entering a pulpit. The text offers to the reader a deeper understanding of the ministry of preaching. A useful component of the text contains informative bits of information that make the reader aware of the lengthy but necessary preparation needed for an adequate explanation of the scripture. Of primary importance is the consideration of the congregation when a preacher is first approaching the text. This point is of vital importance as it signifies that the speaker is a member of the body of Christ and the congregation.
By not including anything that might be offensive to a reader of a different religion, Hughes expanded his audience to a wide array of readers. Incorporating this religious experience to your own life experiences can be beneficial when relating to similar situations that you might have faced, or will face in the future. This story of a young man realizing that things may not always be as easy as others make it seem, and that at some points in life you must rethink everything you thought you once knew, is an important life lesson to all readers. Forming your own opinion on controversial subjects, such as religion, is something that one must do several times throughout their lives. This reason itself is what makes this story by Hughes interesting and unique in the way that it can relate to so many subjects not regarding
Caldwell (2016) stresses that the underlying importance of reading the Bible as a story is in that of reflection and imaginative engagement. Thus, ‘’The Catholic Children’s Bible’’ underscores a Froebelian philosophy of developing the child’s intrinsic motivation for
In Hughes’s short essay, which he ironically titles “Salvation,” he tells the reader about one of his most significant childhood memories. Hughes provides background about a huge revival at his aunt’s church. He flashes forward to the day where he was supposed to be called upon by Jesus and greeted by a bright light his aunt repeatedly tells him about. Hughes recalls that he sat on the mourners’ bench right in the front row with the rest of the unsaved children.
In fear of what the future may bring, some rely on their religious values to keep them afloat and provide them with comfort during their dark times. In David Foster Wallace’s short story “Good People,” Lane and Sheri, a young couple, face the initiation into adulthood as they struggle with their religious identity while grappling with an unexpected pregnancy. As devout Christians, Lane and Sheri initially turn to their faith for comfort and guidance. Still, they soon realize that their individual beliefs and values are at odds with each other and with their religious community/family. The struggle to balance personal desire with a religious affiliation is a common theme in initiation stories, as one must decide to abandon all that one has
McDowell begins the book with an anecdote of his life; a familiar story of the sceptical university Agnostic, ready to fire back a retort at the slightest mention of God, Christianity, and anything (or anyone) within. He recounted the all too common feeling of a meaningless life, the seemingly innate itch of human existence, and how it brought him to various places in his life—until he stumbled upon a particular group of people and was changed forever. This introduction, though short, is crucial to understand, for it sets the stage for the remainder of the book. It tells not only the story of a former non-believer, but the story of everyone—it presents us the life of Jesus Christ, not as a gentle sermon or a feel-good retelling, but as an assertive, rational reply to the accusation: ‘Christianity is a myth, and so is your God.’
Question #3: How can understanding this big picture help you as you seek to apply scripture to course content? Answer #3: I find that goal setting is
Growing up Christianity had always been part of my life and there was no question about it. My family was christian and the culture that my parents grew up in was heavily religious. However, I personally never had a true connection to Christ at a young age. To me church was the place I went to answer questions in Sunday School and win prizes for it, and that was how I saw it for a long time. It was hard for me to see it has more than that and from the outside I may have looked like the kid had a true connection with Christ by the way I talked in front of the church when my class presented, or the fact that I was able to answer most if not all the questions correctly.
Suffering is important for the growth of Christianity because of how the bible is written. Although a few cases may not hold try to these facts, the book give good examples of suffering and how it has effects on a person’s religious
