With the British gone and the United States now in her building stages, an attiude needed to be taken towards the Native Americans, specifically the Cherokee Indians. The administrations before Jackson treated the Cherokee Indians with a somewhat docile, amiable hand, however much was left to be desired on the side of the United States. Many did not want to share the newly freed land with those that were not their own. Underneath the façade of friendship was manipulation, guarded ethnocentrism and racism.
Imagine yourself going back into the past and living with the Coastal and Plateau tribes. Wouldn't you want to see the resources they used? They have to use the sources that are found around them based on where they live. So the Chinook tribe of the coast and Nez Perce tribe of the Plateau interacted with their environment differently and similarly to provide food, shelter and clothing for their people. There is many differences and similarities between the Coastal tribe, Chinook and the Plateau tribe, Nez Perce on the way they get and use their food based on their environment.
The state of the nation's economy is typically a hot topic that is frequently brought up in community meetings, politics, and gossip. However, one area of the economy that is not often heard about is the economies of the United States Native American tribes. Federally recognized Native American tribes are unique in our nation in that they are sovereign governments (National Congress of American Indians). Each tribe is unique in it's cultural, diversity, and economy due to the sovereign status of the Native American tribes.
In Canada there were many nations before us such as the Inuit,Haida,and the Iroquois,and these are only some of the Native American tribes in Canada. In this article one of the three tribes dried food to keep it fresh for other seasons such as winter because food is hard to grow during that particular season. Can you guess what tribe used this method of storing food?By using facts and statements to explain how these tribes survived in the mixed regions of Canada. The Iroquois,Haida,and Inuit have many differences,but even more similarities. The Haida and Iroquois shelters were very similar because both houses were made of wood planks,however the Haida houses were very cleanly made and an Iroquois home was made as if it had shingles.
The Cherokee have a really simply belief system that were followed by every day. Some of the Cherokees now still live by this belief system. Cherokees use nature into their belief system and religion. Trees are used in their ceremonies and in their medication. Cedar was the most sacred tree and was part of their funeral ritual.
What I learned from this was that the United States government yearned for the Native Americans to move out of ‘their’ land. Most of the tribes moved with no dilemma, but most of the Cherokees refused to move. So they went into a court battle, and the Cherokees won because they had full rights to the land. The President at the time, Andrew Jackson, ousted the ruling and proceeded with the Indian Removal Act. When the soldiers found out what the government wanted them to do was remove the Native Americans from their land, most of them resigned and turned in their insignias and regalia to the military.
Of the many Native tribes, two of them were the Iroquois and the Cherokee. These two tribes had many interesting characteristics and ways of life. Some of which they share. In some ways, they differ. The Iroquois were located and lived in present-day New York, at the northeastern woodlands area.
The agriculture and mythology of a culture has a large influence on the traditions and the way in which a culture behaves. Both agriculture and mythology play huge roles in every day lives of the community under which they thrive. Prior to the settlement of the thirteen colonies in the United States there were several differentiating groups of indigenous people that lived in communities through out the US. These people were the Native Americans and each tribe of these people had different ways of agriculture, mythology, and several other varying facets of life. The Cherokee is a tribe that still thrives currently and has 293,074 people in their population.
Cherokee Tribe The Native American tribe, the Cherokees have been a tribe that has been prominent for many years in American history. The Cherokee tribe is probably one of the most well-known and wide spread tribes in the United States. Originally, the Cherokees were established in the southern Appalachian Mountains, Carolinas, Northern Georgia, Alabama, Southwest Virginia, and the Cumberland Basin of Tennessee. The Cherokees also claimed different parts of land in parts of present day Kentucky.
Although Native Americans are characterized as both civilized and uncivilized in module one readings, their lifestyles and culture are observed to be civilized more often than not. The separate and distinct duties of men and women (Sigard, 1632) reveal a society that has defined roles and expectations based on gender. There are customs related to courtship (Le Clercq, 1691) that are similar to European cultures. Marriage was a recognized union amongst Native Americans, although not necessarily viewed as a serious, lifelong commitment like the Europeans (Heckewelder, 1819). Related to gender roles in Native American culture, Sigard writes of the Huron people that “Just as the men have their special occupation and understand wherein a man’s duty consists, so also the women and girls keep their place and perform quietly their little tasks and functions of service”.
Ranging from the south Alleghenies mountain range all the way down to the south of Georgia and far west of Alabama, lived the Cherokee Indians. They were a powerful detached tribe of the Iroquoian family and were commonly called Tsaragi which translates into "cave people. " This tribe was very prominent in what is now called the U.S, but over time has been split up or run out of their land because of social or political encounters with the new settlers from Europe. Despite the dispersion or the split amongst this tribe, they still obtained their core religious beliefs, practices and ceremonies. Their detailed belief system, fundamental beliefs, significant meanings, and their connection to song and dance make up their religious system.
At the turn of the century, American society has changed dramatically. Many people call the year after Civil war the “gilded age”; the year of economic growth, new technologies and products improved, industrial workers working for low pay, and politicians were corrupt. During this period, the economy grew rapidly, producing enormous amounts of prosperity. However, majority of the population was struggling to get by, while the industrial and financial class people live comfortably.
They are often labeled as uncivilized barbarians, which is a solely false accusation against them. This paper aims to address the similarities between Native American beliefs and the beliefs of other cultures based on The Iroquois Creation Story in order to defeat the stereotype that Natives are regularly defined by. Native Americans are commonly considered uncivilized, savage, and barbarian. Nevertheless, in reality the Natives are not characterized by any of those negative traits, but rather they inhabit positive characteristics such as being wise, polite, tolerant, civilized, harmonious with nature, etc. They have had a prodigious impact on the Puritans
Native Americans have a really diverse culture and one report is not enough to talk about all of their cultures. They have fourteen tribes so it is obvious that they will have a lot of different cultures and traditions between all fourteen tribes. It is impossible to have fourteen tribes with different people and expect them to all believe in the same things so some of them have different beliefs and different traditions. They worshipped a lot of gods and even some of the gods had dolls made for them. Some tribes worshipped the sun or fire or some serpents.
Compare and Contrast the Native American Culture Introduction The Native Americans were the original owners of the United States of America. However, due to the population increase in Europe, the European migrated to America in seek of land for farming, settlement, and spread their religion (Desai, n.p). The two communities lived together and interacted with each other.
