Have you personally been substandard before or have seen people treat individuals horrible just because of their race or for the simplicity of their sex? Back in the day citizens were judge on a daily basis prior due to the color of their skin. During the Civil War Slavery was divided into northern and southern states. The northern states fought for the idea of freedom and equality, which means they wanted no more slaves and the Southern states wanted to keep slaves for economical purposes. Also, women were not treated right , at the time men were bias to the idea of equality for women 's rights.
Stanton participated at World Anti-Slavery Convention in London in 1840 jointly with Garrison and she was denied to give an official speech due to her sex and requested to sit in back part a part from the view of present men. Although she had a huge support from men from the group, the other men abolitionist still opposed women’s participation in abolitionism. In 1848 in Seneca Falls Convention she drafted the Declaration of Sentiments modeled on the Declaration of Independence where she stressed the inferior status of women and demanded voting rights for women claiming that men and women are equal. The Declaration passed and thus represented a big step forward for gaining the civil, social, political, rights of women. She advocated for universal suffrage for white and black women and later she opposed to Frederick Douglas, who signed the Declaration of Sentiments but did not support the universal suffrage and thought that it is less important than black male suffrage.
3) Civil Disobedience is the disagreement to follow the laws and stand against them through peaceful demonstrations. In the early 1900’s women were treated lower than men, they were abused, and were not given the right to vote. Women’s rights to own property, and take part in politics were violated. Nellie McClung, a social activist voiced her opinion and stood up against the government to give women equal rights as men; provide them with the right to vote. Civil disobedience was used by Nellie McClung to attain her goals.
Elizabeth Stanton states in “The Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions Seneca Falls Conference” that, “ [mankind] closes against her all the avenues to wealth and distinction which he considers most honorable to himself ”.Traditional values had taught society that the roles of men and women were different, giving men the upper hand in jobs, and education, making women subordinate to men. For instance, Emily Dickinson’s “ anonymity was due in large part to difficulties she would have experienced in trying to overcome prevailing attitudes about women’s proper place”. Dickinson could not reach her dream because her society at the time rejected the women who did not go with the norm of society. However today Dickinson is know as one of America’s
For example, women weren’t allowed to vote, if they were married they had no property rights, they couldn’t gain education because no colleges or universities didn’t want women students, and women were made totally dependent on men. The women’s suffrage movement took place in the middle of the 19th Century. During this time, women struggled to vote and run for office. The problem was that women weren’t being treated as equals. “Deep cultural beliefs in male/female differences in attitudes and abilities supported this situation and giving the women the vote posed a direct threat to male powers and privileges” (Cooney Robert Taking a New Look - The Enduring Significance of the American Woman Suffrage Movement).
Their audience were those who agreed with emancipation, and more specifically blacks who had just been free. Clearly from the image described, those two groups didn’t see blacks as their equals and despised them. Their purpose in creating this image was to install fear in blacks to keep them from voting and believing that they are equal to those in the ex-confederacy. The kkk had been using terror tactics all throughout the Reconstruction era because they didn’t want blacks to vote or participate in their politics the kkk wanted to keep white supremacy. For a while the South had enacted black codes which replaced the slave codes.
For example, in Ritchie v. People (1895), the Illinois Supreme Court rejected the eight-hour provision from the Law of 1893, because it violated the Fourteenth Amendment by depriving women of freedom of contract, which is derived from the due process clause (A14.1). The decision rooted from the larger political battle occuring at the time- most wealthy businesses and political leaders did not support protective laws - which led to a display of false paternity/equality by the justices. In dismay, Florence Kelley rejected that the Fourteenth Amendment could be used in such a manner, and said, “The measure to guarantee the Negro freedom from oppression has become an insuperable obstacle to the protection of women and children” (W15). In the campaign for protective rights for laborers, the ruling from Ritchie v. People marked a defeat, but not an end. In 1908, Kelley, and the NCL, sought redemption through the case of Muller v. Oregon (case description), and picked an attorney, Louis Brandeis, who “seemed like a champion to fight her battle in court” (W26).
Sarah Grimke was an advocate for the abolition of slavery. She then began to defend women rights in order to further advance her main purpose of abolition. In her letters she argues against Catharine Beecher’s about the role of women and how they are subordinate to men. Her main arguments were against that women were not subordinate to men by gods rule. she says that god made them equal but then men created classes where they were higher ranked than women.
And you have to talk for interviews, speak right up in front of boss. Don`t you knew that? You`re so dumb. ``(181). This is one of her fears, not to be accepted by the American society, because that means she will never leave behind her parents` tradition, a tradition that she does not respect or desire for her.
This is because he uses her to both display the roles of woman and how Hermia simultaneously opposes and displays the expectations at the time. Hermia neglects the notion that women should obey the men in their lives because she refuses to follow the wishes of her father, Egeus. As mentioned previously Egeus wishes for Hermia to marry Demetrius, but seeing as Hermia does not love him, she refuses to marry him. Ironically, Shakespeare also uses Hermia’s character to display the ways in
After the awareness of the slaves’ capabilities and the living in communities with slaves, white people in the North that still supported slavery changed their stance after seeing first hand that black people, not just the few free blacks, were similar to everyone else. After the Underground Railroad, moral code came into question, and with the Constitution demanding all people be equal, the people in the North could no longer bear to uphold slavery. The Underground Railroad was risky and dangerous, but it furthered racial equality by creating a coalition against slavery and by freeing African
Consequently, women do not have an equal value to men, who, on account of their apparent superiority, should rule over them. If feminism is about the promotion of a woman’s equality and worth, then feminism cannot be good for women because it encourages them to reject what God has told them to do, that is, to accept their inferiority and live in submission to their
Stephanie McCurry convincingly argues that white females and enslaved Africans were able to form the allied States of America throughout the Civil War era. For McCurry, southern progressive set out to make “a proslavery antidemocratic state, dedicated to the proposition that all men were not created equal” (1). The author’s main point is to determine how white ladies and enslaved African-American ladies and gentleman during the Civil War strained the allied the government, to identify them as government agents. McCurry disagrees that these powerless groups worked out agency during the Civil War because of the general problems brought on by the war
Source B is written by Abigail Adams and demonstrates how woman do not have enough rights as the males do. In Source C, written by a former slave, discusses how slaves didn’t have equal rights compared to others. Additionally Source D, is a video of John Adams that covers both Continental Congresses and why they occurred. Therefore, the Declaration of Independence is hypocritical because all men were not created equal. Abigail Adams provides great examples on how woman did not have the rights males had as shown through Sources B and D. In Source B Abigail sends a letter to John Adams, her husband, demonstrating how woman did not have enough rights.
Randall states “He believed that all men and women had been created equal and he considered blacks as MEN--he had capitalized the word in the clause in the Declaration of Independence that had been stricken by the Second Continental Congress” (592). Jefferson’s slave clause was only defeated by one vote, and according to Allison he wanted slaves gone by 1800 (114). Aaron Schwabach who wrote “Thomas Jefferson, Slavery, Slaves.” said that by January 1, 1808 all states with except for South Carolina, slaves became illegal. Jefferson did not take the changes well, he became disappointed by the slavery part getting turned down (277). Jefferson also states that it is the King’s fault for the slave trade going on for seven years, he is the one who started it, he blames him (Randall 212).
