The Power Dynamics of Race, Class, and Gender in "Get Out" The concept of the uncanny, as defined by Freud, refers to the feeling of unease or discomfort that arises when something familiar becomes strange or unfamiliar. In Get Out, this concept is employed to create a sense of tension and anxiety within the viewer. One of the ways the film uses the uncanny is through the use of doppelgängers and doubles. Chris encounters several characters who bear a striking resemblance to people he knows, but with slight differences that make them unsettling.
In the movie “A League of Their Own”, one can see how the more sexist views of the culture in the 1940s and 50s in America was present in the Girls Professional Baseball League. “A League of Their Own” is a movie about what was once the “All-American Girls Professional Baseball League” which was formed when the young men were sent over to serve in World War II. One of the most obvious cultural views that this movie shows is the feminizing of the baseball players to make them “more acceptable and women like”. Unlike men’s uniforms, that include a full shirt and pants, they were to wear skirts that were very short, too short to play baseball in comfortably. This alone shows how this league was just as much about show as it was about the women’s talent.
Growing up, I was constantly reminded that for whatever reason, Asians had it easy in America. Like somehow, professions in medicine and law were handed to us on silver platters because everyone expected us to become doctors and lawyers anyway. Of course, the multitude of Asian-Americans who do end up in these fields must have worked tirelessly to get there. But I often look back at my childhood thinking, “What if everyone had supported me becoming an actor in the same way they support future doctors?” My dream of working in entertainment was taken as joke, and growing up, I understood that I would have to work twice as hard to become successful in this field because people like me did not receive support in pursuing the arts.
Embracing community is very similar to embracing equality as your community may not be considered equal but in developing knowledge of your community you will develop equality when thinking of your community. The Declaration of Independence declared equality, though the constitution did not and it was not embraced into the constitution until it was added in the fourteenth amendment (Smith). The early years of the United State government had little experience with controlling equality in small scale communities. For example, in To Kill a Mockingbird, the Maycomb community did not embrace those of color into many public settings and they did not receive equal rights in the community. We are called now to embrace everyone in our communities and treat them equally while also including them in what we do as a community.

Reuniting with his family, discovering his heritage, connecting with community members, and learning the traditional teachings and practices have greatly impacted his sense of self, identity, and values toward community. Intersectionality is defined by social categories, such as race and gender that have interconnected to apply to individuals and groups, causing an overlap, which has consequently created a system of discrimination and disadvantages Kimberle Crenshaw coined the term in her article ‘Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Anti-racist Politics’ (1889). Intersectionality can be recognised in many iconic Disney films such as, Cinderella, snow white. Aladdin and little mermaid. All these well-known movies provide societal intersections. This can be addressed through the protagonists and princesses ethnicity of being white, with Disney only recently introducing a black princess, in 2009.
“Bend It Like Beckham” is a 2002 British movie of two eighteen-year-old girls from two different cultural background living in London with a passion for football (soccer) and a dream of becoming a professional football players. One of the two girls, Jess Bhamra (Parminder Nagra), came from a traditional Indian family while the other, Jules Paxton (Keira Knightley), belonged to a native British family.
