On the fourth of July, 1776, the United States Declaration of Independence was signed. In the Declaration of Independence some core American values are included, and one of them is that “all men are created equal” (UShistory.org). The idea that all men are equal suggests that no distinction should be made between them, thus also not on the basis of their economic and social status and from this idea the ideology of a classless society emerged. The ideology of a classless society implies that American society should be free from the division of people into social classes. In this essay I want to argue that the idea that American society still is a classless society is absolutely absurd, as people get classified based on many aspects such as their wealth, level of education and social status, and that the fact that many Americans still hold on to the ideology of a classless society is a sign of complete obstinacy.

The fact that so many Americans continue to believe in the idea of classlessness is a clear sign of obstinacy towards the problems American society faces, as Vance Packard notes “[Americans] certainly are the world’s most self-proclaimed equalitarian people” (12). The question of social class is a very sensitive subject in the United States; for example a man from New Haven, Connecticut, “responded to a direct question about the social classes in his town … by saying, ‘I don’t like to think too much about this’” (Packard 13). In America after World War Two, citizens were split between classes based on their economic stability. Americans today still look at these classes and define these people as better off or worse off than the next person. Why do people judge others for having less money than them? Why do employers send lower class citizen away when they need the money the most? In his research book The Vertical Mosaic, he proved Canada to be a highly stratified society. I had an opportunity to watch a movie “People like us” in my class last week. This movie has great impact, which reflects the images of different types of society. It focuses side by side on different social classes by describing their economical social status in society.
