In “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, a group of girls were found dancing in the forest. Betty, the minister’s daughter, becomes sick and they believe she is possessed. Abigail, the minister’s niece, is questioned but blames it all on Tituba. Tituba confesses to have signed a deal with the devil and is seen as saved by God so then Abigail confesses to also be saved and not hung. Abigail blames different people
Because of that, I do not believe she acts like a traditional Puritan woman should. One reason Abigail did not act like traditional Puritan women was because she danced in the woods. Abigail herself states that anyone caught dancing will be whipped. When her uncles caught the girls in the woods dancing by the fire, Abigail did not mention they were saying boys' names wishing they could marry them. She also did not mention that she wished for John Proctor's wife to die.
During Act 1 Mary attempted to be righteous, by trying to get Abigail to confess about what the dancing in the forest. She doesn’t want to be hanged for witchcraft and breaks down to the point Abigail smashes her across the face. Mary claims that they’ll “only be whipped for dancing’.” (Miller 18).“Abby, we’ve got to tell. Witchery’s a hangin’ error’.”
As Abagail talks to her uncle about what happened that night in the woods she says “we did dance, Betty was frightened and fainted” (miller 10). Abagail and the rest of the girls were dancing and casting spells and she’s trying to cover it up and lie to her uncle and tell him they were only dancing because that’s the only part he seen. Towards the end of the book when the hanging and blaming starts and the town finds out that her and john proctor has had an affair before, they realize all of the non-sense is Abagail’s fault just because she wants john.as Hathorne and parris has a conversation, Hathorne says to parris “she has robbed you? Parris responds and says thirty-one pound is gone, I am penniless” (miller 132). As there talking about Abagail running away and steeling her uncles own money, it shows how mendacity she really is.
It is prohibited to dance because of their religion and soon everyone knew that the group of girls were dancing in the forest naked. Abigail threatened the girls by telling them if they said that they did more than danced in the forest she’ll “come to [them] in the black of some terrible night and [she] will Lopez 2 bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder [them]” (Miller 148).Abigail and the girls started blaming random people in the town. Abigail’s intensions were to blame goody Proctor and have John Proctor all to herself. The girls made bad actions instead of confessing. With the huge act they had going on; they caused people to die based on their lies.
In the play Abby tries to do witchcraft to kill John Proctor's wife Elizabeth. She almost gets caught doing it so she accuses many people of bewitching her and got many people hanged. She accuses Elizabeth of bewitching her to kill her. The court will not kill her because she is pregnant but John Procter ends up being hanged because he was accused.
“But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again” (Miller 146). This highlights John's hate for Abigail and how he would hurt himself than touch her again. John loves his wife and even though he cheated on her before he never wants to hurt her again. Abigail feels that John’s wife, Elizabeth, is an evil woman and is trying to blacken her name in the village.
This affair was never fully proven, but Proctor did say, “Abby, I may think of you from time to time but I will cut off my hand before I’ll reach for you again” (Miller 1140). Abigail was madly in love with Proctor and wanted Elizabeth out of the picture so she could have Proctor all to her self. Abigail was very jealous of Elizabeth. She thought that if Elizabeth would die, she would get Proctor all to her self. She accused Elizabeth of being a “cold, sniveling woman”(Miller 1140).
John sees Abigail’s intentions and portrays this when he says “she thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave,” in a confession to Judge Danforth about his relationship with Abigail (Miller, 110). Not only did Abigail want John Proctor all to herself, but also she was concerned about people finding out what she actually was doing in the woods with Tituba and the other girls. It is revealed early on in the play that Abigail cares about her reputation, for example, when she was concerned that Elizabeth was “blackening [her] name in the village” (Miller, 23). If people found out Abigail were trying to put a hex on Elizabeth Proctor in the woods, then sooner or later the truth about John and
There relationship was great before this all happened, before they went in the woods and danced. After that Abigail Williams had told them that she would kill any who told on what happened that night, Abigail had turn all her friends in to monster along side with her. She had made marry warren “Johns worker” against John as she said that John comes to her at night and everyday to sign, he wants her name that ill murder you if his wife hangs, we must go overthrow the court, she had thrown John under the bus because of Abigail, because of her experiences with Abigail, Marry had thrown her relationship with John under the bus. Conclusion: I think that because of this whole Witch craft conspiracy had made a lot of new relationships and brought out peoples true colours, it strengthened John and Liz relationship and weaken John and Abby’s relationship, as with the girls I think it showed them how Abigail really was, and how it made them fall apart.
Abigail’s scorned hart leads her down a vindictive path. Parris is concerned about all the talk about witchcraft, because his daughter Betty has fallen ill. “Uncle, we did dance; let you tell them I confessed it- and I’ll be whipped if I must be.
In the old town of Salem, Massachusetts, there lived a very religious and superstitious people. Everyone had to be Christian, and if something went amiss, everything would get out of control. When Abigail Williams and her friends were found dancing around a fire in the black of night in the forest, people began to wonder what could have possibly been the cause and purpose of such wicked ways. The easy, first conclusion was that witchery and the devil were involved. They believed that the Devil had to have caused them to do such evil things, and they wanted to find the source of it.
