In the play The Crucible there are many liars and people that know how to deceive others. The play, by Arthur Miller, is set in the year of 1692 in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts. There is a theocratic society in place, which helped spin the problem at hand way out of proportion. Suspicions of witchcraft grow when a young girl suddenly becomes inert. People believe that her soul has been taken by the Devil. Abigail Williams, Mary Warren, and Mercy Lewis were just a few of the group of older girls that witnessed the strange events. Abigail was the young girl’s cousin who had recently been living with them after getting kicked out of her last job as a maid for the Proctor’s. She felt like Elizabeth was the sole purpose for John Proctor not wanting to be with her anymore. Even though this was false, and John simply thought of it as a foolish mistake in the past. “I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near! Or did I dream that? It’s she put me out, you cannot pretend it were you. I saw your face when she put me out, and you loved me then and you do now!” (21). Abigail said this to John the night that the young girl became sick. It shows how she has always felt about John and Elizabeth. Abigail soon realized that if she confessed to these crimes of witchcraft she could easily throw out other names to shift the focus point off of herself. So she did just that, and the other girls caught right onto it. Soon after starting this chaotic mess, while she was at the trials, Abigail accused Elizabeth of witchcraft. She did this as an attempt to get Elizabeth killed so she could go on and live with John. Abigail successfully deceived everyone into thinking that she was a victim of these witches. She did this not only to help get herself out of trouble, but to ruin her enemies in the
