In the years before Prohibition, the Progressive Movement created a mood of reform to improve society. The United States had just ended World War I against Germany a great producer of alcohol. In addition, businessmen like John D. Rockefeller and Henry Ford strongly believed that alcohol was a threat to the economy because workers would go to work drunk and would not work efficiently. The United States repealed the 18th Amendment and allowed alcohol because of increased crime, problems with enforcement, and economic need. The first reason America repealed Prohibition was due to an increase in crime.
In the early 1920s, the views on alcohol in America had two very different standpoints. On one side, there were the people who believed that alcohol was a good contribution to society. These people were known as Modernists. On the other side, there were the people known as traditionalists who thought alcohol was evil and corrupt. These two sides differ in opinions which led to the debate against the drys and the wets.
The prohibition was a huge disaster. It made it so easy for goons and crooks to have something to sell. In this case it was alcohol. Since people were illegally smuggling alcohol there was tremendous violence.
Many people also saw drinking as a huge drag on the economy and wasting money on alcohol was unpatriotic.
