During the opening scene, Thomas, who is narrating, states that some children are just “pillars of flame” that burn everything they touch or “pillars of ash” that fall apart if you touch them. Victor’s treatment as a child turned him into a “pillar of fire,” he is filled with anger. However, Victor changed from fire into ash, like a rebirth, after learning the truth about Arnold, experiencing a situation like him and the fire, and finally spreading his ashes. Whereas Thomas remained, after losing his parents in the party fire, a pillar of ash, always both sensitive and caring.
“Herbal” by Nalo Hopkinson can be interpreted in many ways. Some readers may presume that the story talks about anxiety and depression, while others say it is about drugs and possibly abuse. I believe that the story is about the main character, Jenny, and her life with an abusive partner. The story shows that a victim in an abusive relationship will always have feelings for their partner, even when the partner is no longer in his or hers life. There 's always that desire for the abusive partner because our human nature is to desire and be desired by someone.
In 1892 Charlotte Perkins Gilman published her short story “The Yellow Wallpaper”, in which the unnamed main character who has been diagnosed with neurasthenia is prescribed the rest cure by her physician husband. Her husband, John, takes her to an estate out in the country where she is isolated from everyone but her husband and his sister, and is ordered to do absolutely nothing but rest for the entire time they are there. The story follows this woman’s decent into madness as a result of the rest cure and total social isolation. In this story, Gilman uses her setting and characters to explore both the culture’s anger over the oppression and disregard of women and the fear over the beginning of the first feminist movement. “The Yellow Wallpaper” is set in a mansion out in the country that has been rented by the main character and her husband for the purpose of carrying out her rest cure (Gilman 489).
Symbolism is the representation of an abstract concept through the use of a concrete object, and it is a way of bringing subtext to an otherwise one-dimensional story. It is through the use of these symbols that Cisneros creates a coming-of-age story, showing the different aspects of growing up as a young Latina girl. To begin with, shoes are a recurring symbol in “Mango Street”.
