In 1767, the Townsend Acts were passed. These acts started the first stirrings of political parties. By the time of the Boston Massacre, the Sons of Liberty were formed. Almost immediately after the ratification of the Constitution and the first election, two parties with opposite views formed: the Federalists and the Republicans. Hamilton, a federalist, came up with a financial plan that would help the United States rise out of National debt.
In the late 1700’s, two Founding Fathers each created their own political party. Thomas Jefferon and Alexander Hamilton each had their own political party, the Democratic-Republican and the Federalists, and shared many resemblances. Both of these great men were Founding Fathers, committed to a successful government, writers, and were part of the Presidential Cabinet. Although they shared many ideas, they disagreed on the other person’s ideals. The conflicting ideas of these two unforgettable men created the US government.
During the first presidency with George Washington, there were no political parties. It was not until 1796 until voters broke into factions and started to vote for towards their ideological leanings. George Washington feared this, and even spoke about his ideas in his Farewell Address in 1796. George Washington was opposed to different political parties because he feared that once one party got elected into office, it would take over too much power and neglect the other party. Although many consider The United States to be a two-party system, consisting of Democrats and Republicans, there are a plethora of different parties, with varying beliefs. The Democratic and Republican parties are complicated and have complex histories with party beliefs changing as the years went by. Other minor parties, however, tended to stem from either single issues, or that had values that were adopted by the two major parties. The wanted to rebuild a relationship with Britain, assumption of debt from the revolutionary war, and programs with encouraged manufacturing. The Jeffersonian republics were run with southern agriculture in mind.

The United States is currently under a two-party system which is the Democrats and the Republicans. Also, the two-party system parties tend to have overlapping coalitions, and programs, both parties must appeal to the Middle of the road voters who provide the margin of victory (Patterson, 2013, p. 197). However, the Democrats and the Republicans are able to win by appealing to the majority of voters during election (Patterson, 2013, p. 198). The goal of each party is to gain the most power to get their candidates voted into office (Patterson, 2013, p. 198). The two-party system also demands that the major parties avoid positions that would allow a considerable amount of distant from the political center (Patterson, 2013, p. 198).
