Due to his allegedly eccentric personality and the dubious circumstances surrounding his death, the public perception of the writer has often been somewhat mythologized. One of the most influential authors of all time, Edgar Allan Poe, uses dark imagery and complex syntax to make his short stories and poems harrowing and mysterious. Poe’s tragic backstory contributes to his writing style. Poe’s depressing life, such as the death of his mother, foster mother, and wife to tuberculosis caused him to write stories such as The Masque of the Red Death a story about a disease similar to tuberculosis called the Red Death spread across the country. Another theme throughout some of Poe’s stories is young women dying such as in Annabel Lee and The Fall of the House of Usher. A reason for this is because most every women he loved, his mom, foster mom, and wife, died young.
From Annabel Lee to The Cask of Amontillado and Tell-Tale Heart, from The Raven to The Fall of House Usher, author Edgar Allan Poe has been mesmerizing his audiences with his one of a kind style for decades. Poe has a unique art which allows him to capture his audience's thoughts, feelings, and extend their imagination to places they've never been before by using using figurative language, syntax, and parallelism to control his readers view, opinion, and frame of mind in many of his writings. By focusing on symbolism and irony, Poe is able to add dimension to his writing that many are not able to. Poes rough life is a key source of inspiration for his demented writings. At the age of three, both of Poe's parents died.
My topic for this IB Individual oral presentation will be the affect that Edgar Allan Poe’s works had on his life. We already know that Poe was a very dark person and what I want to address is if he wrote such low-spirited things due to his gloomy life or if it was the writing that turned him into the dreadfully sad man he was. I have chosen this topic because Edgar Allan Poe was a very mysterious man and I find it interesting that his short stories and poems may display some of what he was feeling as if they explained his enigmatic life, but was it because he was felt more comfortable in his stories than the real world? Author’s lives inspire their writing in many ways. An illustrious writer, Edgar Allan Poe, experienced continuous sufferings throughout his life. The heartaches he faced transferred into his writing. Poe’s works are dark and traumatic, such as “The Pit and the Pendulum.” He uses the unthinkable and shapes short stories out of them.
The poet, Edgar Allan Poe, wrote from influences in his life such as his grief, being an orphan and drugs. Poe, born in Boston, spent 3 years with his family until he was orphaned after his mother’s death and his father’s abandonment. Poe was adopted by the Allan family and later attended the university of virginia for a year before dropping out. Poe was kicked out of the army a year after joining. He later married his cousin, Virginia, who passed away at a young age.

Edgar Allan Poe’s last words before he died were, “Lord, help my poor soul.” Edgar Allan Poe didn’t have a very good life. He struggled with depression and a bipolar disorder. Poe’s life affected his writing by how he lost many people, his childhood, and how he struggled with mental illnesses. When he wrote, he wrote how he felt and put those feelings into words
He placed great importance on the American Scholar’s willingness to think for himself and come up with his own ideas. A consideration of some of Poe’s firsts will prove his innovation as a writer and thinker. With works like “Murders in the Rue Morgue,” and “The Purloined Letter,” Poe is credited as the creator of the detective story. Poe is also credited with contributing to the advent of science fiction with works like “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar.” Poe also wrote works of horror never seen before in stories such as “The Black Cat.”
Edgar Allen Poe was an amazing writer whose life ended much sooner than expected on October 7, 1849. His cause of death is an unknown and very controversial topic. Some say that he died of alcohol poisoning, while others believe that he died due to a case of rabies. Some think that on his journey to the North he had a large amount of an alcoholic beverage which lead him to die before he could reach his destination. According to Burton R. Pollin and Robert E. Edgar Allan Poe was an American author; he mainly focused in genres such as short stories and poems. Poe didn’t have much of an academic background in literature but, he excelled in it. Some people believe that his success was mostly due to the fact that his life was very sad, filled by a series on misfortunate events, such as being an orphan, suffering from poverty and being constantly surrounded by death. In his works, Poe portrays narratives that are characterized by their mystery and macabre. The topic of death was ever present in his work, constantly describe with dark moods and somewhat terrifying settings.
Childhood Tragedies and Poems From not having a father in his life to losing his mom to Tuberculosis at the age of two and being separated from his brother and sister, one might say that Edgar Allan Poe has had a terrible life. Poe was placed in foster care and later on was adopted by John and Frances Allan. The Allan’s gave Poe a childhood that he had never had before. However, as one might already know, something bad always happens to Poe. Sadly, John disowned Poe after he was discharged from the military for neglect of duty.

Though Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories like, The Cask of Amontillado, to his poems like, The Raven, Poe’s shows his writing style to use physical imagery and connotative syntax to show ,imagery in his writing. Throughout his life, Poe had always lived through the most chaotic and evil of time. His parents died while he was 3 years old. After his parents died, he lived with another family member who never accepted him as their own son. Later on in life, Poe had served in the military and at that point he started writing poems.
His true passion from the beginning was writing. Perhaps Edgar Allan Poe had been inspired by Irving 's Gothic short stories.”
