Swelling only occurs on the back of the hands and feet and moves into the finger and toes. This may be the first sign of sickle cell in infants. The spleen helps filter out abnormal red blood cells and helps fight infections. At times the spleen traps many cells that should be in the bloodstream and it grows large. This causes anemia.
There are two kinds of liver failure: acute and chronic. Acute liver failure happens when liver cells are damaged and unable to function. Khokhar and Niazi (2012) defined Acute liver failure is a severe medical emergency causing from numerous insults
Chicken pox in adults usually causes a more severe than cases seen in children. Adults can develop bacterial infections that cause sepsis. It can also cause pneumonia, encephalitis and toxic shock syndrome. Cases in adults unlike most childhood cases can develop into life threatening complications as the case in this chapter showed. Since it is a viral infection dugs can only inhibit the infection not cure it.
(NHS choices, 2016). False readings are usually gotten from the pulse oximeter unless a CO detector is used. Therefor patients exposed to 1-70ppm will not experience any symptoms from prolonged exposure except for patient with cardiac disease who will experience chest pain. Patient with exposure <70ppm may develop mild to moderate symptoms and 150-200ppm will become disorientated, unconscious and possibly die. (NHS choices,
Soon after HBV enters the body, it infects cells in the liver called hepatocytes. In response to this infection, the immune system targets the virus and the hepatocytes already infected with the virus. This causes inflammation of the liver (hepatitis). HBV can cause acute hepatitis, meaning short-term inflammation of the liver, until the immune system is able to clear the virus from the body, usually within six months of becoming infected with the virus. However, HBV can become a chronic infection.
This vinegar can also really help people lose weight. Apple cider vinegar is proven to make people feel full making them eat 200-275 fewer calories than they would have without apple cider vinegar. This is because vinegar is high in carbohydrates and when cells have carbohydrates to turn into sugar, they do not focus on fat. This ends up making people less hungry and helping them to lose
Discovered in 1989, Cystic Fibrosis is the most common, fatal genetic disease in the United States. Statistics show that 30,000 people in the US have been named with this disease. (Genome) Cystic Fibrosis is a disease caused when the CFTR (Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Regulator) is defective and the cells do not release the right amount of chloride. This causes for the body to produce thick, sticky mucus that clogs up the lungs, leads to infection, blocks the pancreas, which stops the digestive enzymes from reaching the intestine. Symptoms require; salty tasting skin, wheezing, shortness of breath, persistent coughing, poor growth or weight gain, frequent/bulky stool, and male infertility.
Later on the doctors also known as plague doctors tried to find ways to stop this horrible virus. They tried to let the victim bleed out and maybe it would drain the virus out of them, but this did not work. Because of it, it just spreads more than usual. Overtime the plague weakened, but that was not the end. It found a new way to spread, This name was called Airborne, how this worked was when someone coughed or sneezed, it would fly into another victim’s body.
We all know breast cancer is detected through mammograms and colon cancer can be caught early through a regular colonoscopy. When it comes to lung cancer, which kills the most Americans, there are only a few tests. Unlike mammography and colonoscopy, not everyone has to get screened. While lung cancer is diagnosed in people who’ve never smoked in their lives, a majority of the patients have a history of smoking. If you’ve quit smoking, you’re in much better health than if you were still lighting up.
Pandemics will be the downfall of the human race. Avian flu can become this pandemic. Avian flu is a bird flu, but has been known to make the cross-species jump to humans, pigs, and even whales. The H5N1 virus, a strain of an avian influenza, has been terrorizing the world for several years. Symptoms affect the infected host very quickly and negatively, sometimes causing death in a day.
Introduction: Dissections are performed on preserved animals donated specifically for science education in order to provide a hands-on experience to observe and study anatomy of an animal in three dimension, unlike a textbook, and how the organ systems are interconnected. In this particular dissection a fetal pig was used because the organs present in a pig, and their position in the body are similar to those of humans which provides insight on how human organs systems work overall and why they are essential to life. The purpose of our experiment was to focus on the external, digestive, cardiovascular, respiratory, and excretory systems of the fetal pig to understand how theses system work together in order to sustain life.
