Abraham Lincoln once said, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power”. Power has the ability to test the way people behave. Power doesn’t just affect one person, it influences the behavior of others. Power has a toll on people that can affect them in a negative or positive way. John Steinbeck wrote a fictional novel, Of Mice and Men which takes place on a farm. Two migrant workers struggle to find their place on the ranch. Steinbeck uses conflict, imagery and tone to convey how characters exercise their power over one another. Some characters use their power to help the weaker people on the ranch, but others like to use their power to take advantage over them. Because power has such a strong …show more content…
Steinbeck shows us this use of power through imagery. Curley's wife is given power by the way she looks and gains respect from the men because she is Curley's wife. Even though she a women, she gains respect from the men when, “ wore a cotton house dress and red mules, on the instep of which were little bouquets of red ostrich feathers” (31). Therefore, Steinbeck shows uses imagery to show how Curley's wife uses her appearance to get the other men to do what she wants. The way she is described, in her red short dress gives her power to manipulate weaker men who are blinded by her looks and beauty. Imagery shows us Curley's Wife can use her image to get what she wants. A second example of how Steinbeck uses imagery to show Curley's wife using her power for egotistical reasons is when, she is looking for Curley's in the bunkhouse. Even though she isn’t allowed in the bunkhouse no man tells on her because she seems so sweet and innocent. She deceives the men when, “ Her face was made up and the little sausage curls were all in place” (84). So, Imagery is used to show that Curley's Wife cares about her image to look nice for all the guys on the ranch. Her image shows that she likes to look good to get attention from the other ranch workers. A final example, of how Steinbeck uses imagery to show that Curley's wife uses her power for selfish …show more content…
Steinbeck uses tone, to show how Slim uses power for good reasons. Slim is given power through his job on the ranch, and the other men respect him. Although, Curley and Curley’s wife us their power for selfish reasons, Slim uses his power for the greater good. Steinbeck shows the readers this through tone. Slim likes to help out the other guys on the ranch and he is a good role model to the other ranch workers. Slim shows this leadership when, “...he moved with a majesty only achieved by royalty and master craftsman” (33). Therefore, tone is used to show that Slim is a good role model for the other men, and uses his power to get them to listen to him. Steinbeck describes Slim as a prince, this personality he os given, get's him respect from the others. Tone shows that's his personality affects the other men, and he is role model to his coworkers. Another example, of how tone is used to show Slim uses his power for good, is when we first meet Slim. Slim has a presence that is noticed by the other men. Slim doesn't boast about his power he is modest. The reader can see this when, “... gravity in his manner and so quiet so profound that all talk stopped when he spoke” (33). So, Slim has a power over the men, that Steinbeck shows us through his description. Tone gives Slim the attention he gets from the other men. Tone gives him the ability to
Of Blacks and Whites “It is not what an author says, but what he or she whispers, that is important.” -- Logan Pershall Smith (adapted) Authors have the power to influence readers not only with what they say but with what they imply. Authors can, and often will, use this power to bring light to darker times. John Steinbeck wields this power in his novella, Of Mice and Men to tell the public of the cruelty and prejudices that were directed towards minorities during the 1930s.
This represents the ideal world and life many characters in the book strive to obtain. 2. One theme Steinbeck tries to convey about human nature and life in his novel is the human desire for companionship. Curley’s wife was always seeking to converse with the farm hands because she was tired of sitting home alone all day. Even though he originally protested, Crooks eventually allowed Lennie’s company because he is lonely.
Prillaman, Laine In the story, ‘Of Mice and Men’ Steinbeck uses archetypes To make the story have meaning. Steinbeck plays with the archetypes to show how people do change. To make them more like people and less like characters in a fairytale. Characters like Lennie, Curley’s wife, and George are perfect examples of how people change in either good or bad ways.
In the classic American novel Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, power is a recurring theme. Most of the characters have direct ties to power, whether it is physical, social, economic, or intellectual. But the author balances their powers with flaws. Lennie, a main character, has a lot of physical power. Yet due to his mental disability, he does not understand the consequences of his actions.
In the Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck is saying that power has a direct effect on how people live their lives. Throughout the character’s actions and the symbolism in the intercalary chapters, Steinbeck shows us that the wrong kind of power will cause a negative affect how people live. An example of how Steinbeck’s writings talks about the negative effect of power would be the mentioning of banks throughout the story. In a quote he says “The Bank—or the Company— needs—wants—insists—must have—as though the Bank or the Company were a monster, with thought and feeling, which had ensnared them.
Dejection is the sentiment segregation and no expectation or dreams throughout your life-which is the thing that Steinbeck accomplishes by depicting this topic viably through key anecdotal characters in Of Mice and Men. By living in the town of 'Soledad ' (Spanish for forlornness), the gathering of people gets a staggering feeling of the discouraging condition that the vagrant agriculturists are surviving by their redundant way of life and the outcomes they look through the Incomparable Despondency and the Dustbowl. However another part of forlornness which is uncovered defenselessly through a few characters is the possibility of the American Dream, for Steinbeck shows us that even through diligent work and thriving, it is unattainable which
I swear you hadda.” (Page 107) Slim is comforting George, telling him that it was the right choice. He is reassuring him so that he is not too hard on himself. Steinbeck uses Slim to convey complex thought and wisdom, so it seems like Steinbeck uses Slim as his voice.
“If I was alone, I could live so easy. […] I could get a job an’ not have no mess”(Steinbeck, 145) “Never you mind, said Slim. A guy got to sometimes” (Steinbeck, 148) The approval from a guy named Slim, really shows how crimes were looked upon during this time.
The spirit of unity emerges as the one unfailing source of strength in Steinbeck’s novel. He tries and accomplishes in conveying it to the reader, through imagery. On multiple accounts,
The characters in “Of Mice and Men” have memorable personalities that we all can relate to due to their set archetypes. John Steinbeck uses these common and generalized in order to have the readers relate more to his characters. This allows the reader to experience the story and feelings of the characters much better and lets the reader to connect to the character’s feelings, or force the reader to form opinions that aligns with those of the main protagonist(s). In “Of Mice of Men”, readers are initially introduced to Curley’s Wife with words such as “tart”, and having “the eye”. Which, even if readers do not know what that means, it may be inferred through diction that she is overly flirty, or a “tramp”.
Of mice and Men A mental disease is a huge deal and many people struggle with it. Some people have it bad, and some just have a mild mental disorder. In the book, it shows how someone with a mental disease went wrong.
One of the main themes (or lessons) that steinbeck teaches is that we are all humans, and therefore we all have a lot in common. We need each other. The problem is that we ignorant humans have set up a system where we have put divides in between different groups of people that are nearly impossible to overcome. Steinbeck uses characterization to showcase this theme. Steinbeck gave each character a defining “physical” characteristic and a personality/main emotion.
Of Mice and Men “listen, nigger,” she said. “you know what I can do to you if you open your trap?” (pg.80). This shows how the word “nigger” is used to control a black person. In the book of Mice and Men the word “nigger” is used quite often but towards crooks, since he is the only black person in the book.
In the novel of “Of Mice and Men” power and friendship is the very bases of the story. There are many people with power in the book but I specifically was interested in Curley’s power. Curley is the son of the Ranch’s boss and he is very spoiled. He does not listen to rules and usually gets away with any trouble he makes or gets into.
The Death of The Unborn Female American Dream Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, takes place during the time of The Great Depression; an era extremely difficult for women. The novella contains many iconic characters that serve as a metaphor to our societal standards. Curley’s wife is introduced just like any other; however, the emphasis on her feminine features are metaphoric to where women stand in society. In order to prove that society makes it impossible for certain people to attain The American Dream, Steinbeck objectifies, sexualizes, and kills Curley’s wife to show that women cannot reach The American Dream. Steinbeck uses specific vocabulary to objectify Curley’s wife; alienating her from The American Dream.
