Carnegie was one of the major turning points in the beginning of the Golden Age or as Mark Twain would call it the The Gilded Age. “Jay Gould, Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and other business leaders pioneered new strategies, to seize markets and consolidate power in the rising railroad, steel and oil industries”. What these men did was the main reason why there was a gilded age. After the Civil War American industries were expanding tremendously and old industries like the iron industry turned into a modern industry of U.S steel. Oil companies was aiding the electric light and power of America.
Before the 1860s U.S. railroads were inefficient for big business to explode, and shipping goods wasn’t as easy before Cornelius Vanderbilt organized a steam ship company. He also controlled all lines of railroad linking New York to the Great Lakes. His strategy was to create a monopoly to gain wealth and power of all the effective railroad lines into one major company. He expressed competition and set unfair prices for the workers. The workers soon revolted and went on strike in 1877 due to the low pay and increase of work hours.

John D. Rockefeller, a ruthless entrepreneur who made a deal with a billionaire (by today’s standards), Cornelius Vanderbilt. Cornelius Vanderbilt was a very wealthy man by his invention of railroads. When Vanderbilt saw a demand for oil, he turned to John D. Rockefeller to make a deal in which his trains get filled with Rockefeller’s oil. However, when Rockefeller saw opportunity strike for his industry, he invented pipelines that carried his oil throughout the United States. By Rockefeller performing this act, he became the nation’s robber baron.

Carnegie, Rockefeller, Morgan, and Vanderbilt all have done things that can identify them as captains of industry. These businessmen gave their time and effort to help the economy grow.
Steel was a much needed resource during the Gilded Age, as railroads were the most popular mean of transportation. Steel was needed for the production of these trains and railroads. Steel was produced using the Bessemer Process, which sped up the production of steel and made the process much easier. In a time after the Civil War, when a transcontinental railroad was created connecting the East and West, people began to move and settle across the country, creating new urban cities and manufacturing hubs. It was because of the railroad that the Second Industrial Revolution and the Gilded Age took place which rapidly increased the manufacturing of products through the new machines in factories and the spread of ideas by the telegraph and railroad. It was in this context that many farmers, as well, began to move West and experience a loss in the prices of their crops. It is also in this context that many workers were forced to work long, laborious hours with little pay. Farmers responded to industrialization in the Gilded Age by forming organizations such as the Granger movement and the Farmers Alliance as well as creating the Populist Party.
During the period of 1870 to 1900 large corporations, such as the railway company, grew significantly in size, number, and influence. The cause of this was the need for a new way of transportation, the demand was great so the railways expanded all over the United States so that they could meet these demands. These large corporations affected the economy by making it easier to pay for everyday chores, politics in the way that it gave politicians too much power but in doing so gave normal limited power. The corporations had great power and influence which made them a huge impact to society.
While in "Gilded Age", all levels of government had corruption, graft public money for their own. One of the most notorious New York City Boss Tweed William M. Tweed, his wealth has more than $25 million in 1871, all was dirty money. During the period he served as mayor of New York, the city requires all public officials to report false, false ratio as high as 85%. He presided over the construction of the New York county government office buildings, 40 chairs and 3 tables then discount about $179000, but a thermometer was quoted $7500. According to statistics, in 1860 ~ 1900, American municipal debt by $200 million soared to $1.4 billion, most of them are the City boss and partisans pocketed.

Vanderbilt was the first of the three to be a leader of industry. Vanderbilt made millions using the railroad system and built an empire with them.
During the time of the Gilded Age the governemnt (politicians) was very corrupt. Everything they did was for their own gain. " At the national level, many lawmakers supported bills aiding companies in which they had invested money or from which they received stock or salaries," (pg. 617). This quote shows that the governments lawmakers did things for their own gain intead of the good of the people.
The decade between 1890 and 1900 expressed a crucial time in the United States of America’s history. Many people experienced struggles throughout this time while others prospered. Mark Twain suggested that despite the significant achievements of the United States, Americans experienced poverty. This statement is an accurate description of the lively hood people experienced in their daily lives during the Gilded Age whether it was positive or negative. Many people during this time period focused on the positive outcomes that resulted from the Gilded Age such as new inventions, the gospel of wealth, additions of land to the country, urbanization, and middle-class improvements.
