In the developing western world, women have always been considered the weak link of the society. For centuries they have been treated as less intelligent and less important than men, and therefore, subordinate to men. Since, as a general rule, men are physically stronger than women are, such domination wasn’t hard to achieve. For hundreds of years, this mindset has impacted humanity’s understanding of equality and has left its mark on the way our society functions to this day. For the western world over the past few hundred years, and sadly to this day still having its impact on the general public, white males have been considered the most righteous, intelligent, moral, and thus, supreme to the rest of society.
Carrie Chapman Catt, an effective advocate for women 's rights, utilizes Ethos and Logos effective to craft a persuasive argument for the suffrage of women. In Catt’s speech “Address to Congress on Women’s Rights,” she utilizes Logos to gain support for women’s rights. She creates a compelling argument through her concession, repetition, and historical facts to back up what she says. Catt uses concession effectively in her well planned speech. In nearly all historical societies, sexism was prevalent. Power struggles between genders mostly ended in men being the dominant force in society, leaving women on a lower rung of the social ladder. However, this does not always mean that women have a harder existence in society. Scott Russell Sanders faces a moral dilemma in “The Men We Carry in Our Minds.” In the beginning, Sanders feels that women have a harder time in society today than men do.
“The Politics of Muscle,” an essay written by Gloria Steinem, is successful in effectively comparing and contrasting how society's standards implies that there is a difference in strength between men and women. Through the use of different rhetorical claims such as pathos, ethos, and logos, as well as a great deal of subjective and objective claims, Steinem establishes credibility which allows her to create a well-crafted essay. Although, the essay can be perceived as biased since it does not include a great deal of information on the perception of strength on men, its intended audience is women therefore, that aspect does not affect the overall quality of Steinem’s writing. In fact, it only strengthens it considering she expects her audience to share the same opinions and feelings as her. These reasons explain why overall, Steinem does a very good job of persuading the reader to think differently about the perception of women’s strength.
Logos is presented in various ways such as statistics or even just logical thinking. Pollitt’s logical thinking is placed when she explains that Nancy Chodorow, a difference feminist who believes that naturally women are relational and men are autonomous, is wrong when analyzing the real world. Pollitt states, “If Chodorow is right relational women and autonomous men should be the norm, but are they?” (404). Pollitt is informing us that it is clear that we all seen men and women who do not follow such criteria.
Women in the Progressive Era The Progressive Era was a time of change across America, a time when the country chose to reform into an industrialized urban country. Prosperity was widespread across America, so people turned to social issues to try to expand. Minorities in particular became a focus of this time period, and everyone tried to find a way to integrate them into society.
Murray says that it is only because they are denied the freedom to education that they are seen as lacking. Therefore, that argument against them cannot be fairly made. She goes on by comparing two children. Even though a two year old girl is generally seen as more perceptive than her male counterpart of the same age, the boy will be the one allowed to pursue knowledge, while the girl is treated to a different schooling. Murray says the inadequacy of females is therefore not inherent in nature, but because of the restraints placed by society.

Gender inequality is not a new topic. Throughout history, women have faced significant sexist discrimination starting with being denied basic rights enjoyed by men.
