In “The Scarlet Ibis,” by James Hurst we are told the story of Doodle from his brother’s perspective. We’re told just how crazy Doodle could be, how delicate he was and how he cared for a certain bird. Moreover, in “The Scarlet Ibis,” Hurst uses imagery to show the connection between Doodle and the scarlet ibis. The said bird is originally from the tropics but was found badly wounded in Doodle’s own backyard. It ended up falling out of a tree and dying.

The relationship between the protagonist is their brothers in the stories The Sniper and The Scarlet Ibis. In the first story the brothers were on opposite sides. They were shooting at each other and one ended up dying. The relationship was like that because they didn't know who they were shooting at until the end. They were on opposite sides so it was good that he got the kill, but bad because he killed his brother.
The story of The Scarlet Ibis begins with the narrator describing some background of Doodle, who was once known as William Armstrong. We are informed that Doodle has certain conditions that makes him physically and mentally disadvantaged. The narrator is noble to start with as he cares and sympathizes with Doodle. “Doodle was my brother and he was going to cling to me forever… I dragged him across the burning cotton field to share with him the only beauty I know, Old Woman Swamp” (3).
James Hurst creates The Scarlet Ibis with an abundance of many literary devices, but a main device is symbolism. Nature and the Color red are the main symbols that Hurst uses throughout his short story. Hurst provides many symbols in his story and they all have a significant meaning, mostly relating to death. Throughout the story, the author makes multiple references to the color red, not only symbolizing death, but also provides hints of Doodle’s Death. The first encounter with this dreadful color can be traced to the second paragraph when Hurst describes Doodle after being born as a “tiny body which was red”(pg 1).

In the story, the theme is demonstrated through the use of symbolism. The first symbol is the coffin, which is introduced to the reader at the beginning of the story when Doodle was born, as no one believed Doodle would live long. The coffin supports the theme of the story as the narrator, also Doodle's brothers, takes Doodle to see his coffin and makes him touch it by using emotional blackmail when he says "Then I'll leave you here by yourself, I threatened, and made as if I were going down", as Doodle was afraid to be left alone in the attic.

The narrator’s pride wants Doodle to be an ordinary brother, and kills him in the strive for perfection. “For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis,” the narrator reveals (426).
