Good morning I am Luke Thomsen, I am representing the State of Maycomb on a case about Sheriff Heck Tate’s poor investigation. On two counts we will first hear about his poor investigation in the Tom Robinson V, Mayella Ewell case and in the death of Bob Ewell for we never found out who truly murdered Bob Ewell for Sheriff Heck was too lazy to document it. THE THEME AND THEORY My friends, Heck Tate is a lazy man who poorly investigated Mayella Ewell’s abusement and made two men die for his lazy ways. PARTIES Sheriff Heck Tate is a lazy man. Bob Ewell fetched Sheriff Heck Tate out of his office to go down to the Ewell homestead. To be greeted by a severely beaten Mayella Ewell who claimed that it was Tom Robinson who have done it all. First, …show more content…
Mayella was very severely beaten lying on the floor in front of Heck Tate. They lifted Mayella up and splashed her face with water from a bucket. From there on Mayella had claimed that Tom Robinson was to blame for all of what happened. Heck Tate have had arrested Tom Robinson without any substantial evidence only two people who identified Tom were Bob and Mayella and they took Tom to court and now that is why we are here cause we believe Heck may have misinterpreted some …show more content…
Tate grinned. “Sorry that’s what they said. Anyway, She was pretty bruised up when I got there, and she had a black eye comin’.” “which eye?” Mr. Tate blinked and ran his hands through his hair. “Let’s see,” he said softly, then he looked at Atticus as if he considered the question childish “Can’t you remember?” Atticus asked Mr. Tate pointed to an invisible person five inches in front of him and said ”Her left.”.(Lee191-192) Showing that Heck had not remembered or documented the domestic abuse that Mayella had received only knowing the basics of her beating. Heck could not tell the court about where the bruising was without confidence. Telling us he had not paid attention to that detail of the
EVIDENCE Atticus said ¨Did you call a doctor sir? Anybody call a doctor¨ ¨No sir¨ said, Mr. Tate (Lee 190). This piece of evidence shows that Heck Tate did not investigate right because if he did then he would have called a doctor for Mayella's bruises. Sheriff Heck Tate says,¨
THE INTRODUCTION Good afternoon my name is Brooke Sauer, and it is my pleasure to represent the State of Maycomb and to serve as a prosecutor on this crucial day. On August 26, 1936, the defendant didn’t try the best he could to convince the judge that Tom Robinson was innocent. At the end of the conclusion of the case, and after you heard all the evidence, we are confident that you will return a verdict of guilty on the three charges of failing to give all he could to give Tom Robinson his freedom.
I got it caught in a cotton gin when I was twelve years old. All my muscles were torn loose.¨. Tom robinson couldn't have been the one to hit her eye and that gives more of a reason why Tom wouldn't attack her because he also has a big
THE INTRODUCTION Good morning, my name is Braden Hoheisel, and it is my pleasure to represent the State of Maycomb and to serve as prosecutor in this life-changing case. On August 26, 1936 Mr. Gilmer harassed and disrespected Tom Robison in his court trial. He made false statements about stuff not related to the case and called Tom names. At the conclusion of this case, we hope that after you have heard all the evidence that you will choose the verdict of guilty on this case and the charges of harassment and lying.
Mayella accused Tom of rape, which was proven false but the jury decided to choose the voice of a white girl over a black man, which was common during this period of time. The jury then found Tom Robinson guilty, then sentenced Tom to prison. Some may say that Tom Robinson was at fault for entering the Ewell household but Mayella asked tom to come inside, and help her with some tasks which then started the accusations of Tom Raping Maylla Ewell. Tom only helped Mayella because he was black and he wanted to stay on her good side which unfortunately did not happen. Mayella spoke against Tom which caused the jury to find him guilty.
Like when the prosecutor stated, ‘“You were given thirty days once for disorderly conduct, Robinson?”’ (Lee 223). This is followed by the fact that Tom got into a fight. Showing that he has a history of violence, also proves that he could easily harm someone with only one working arm. This ties in with Mayella’s injuries, bruises were found all over the right side of her face.
Do you remember him beating you about that face?” - Atticus (page 247) This quote and statement show that Mayells is unsure what she allowed to tell Atiicus she can not think of an alibi as to how there marks on her face is Tom Robinson didn’t inflict the harm Atticus is well aware of Mayella is indeed lying and he asks this to question her false
Based on the facts provided by each witness, the verdict of this trial should be: Not guilty. The following witnesses that prove Tom Robinson’s innocence are Mr. Heck Tate, Mayella Ewell, and Bob Ewell. The Evidence from Mr.Tate’s testimony contradicts with Reverend Sykes’ inside story. When Mr. Tate was elaborating on Mayella’s bruises, he mentioned: “there were definite finger marks on her gullet” (226) and “were all around” (226) her neck.
Atticus Finch, a powerful local attorney defending the accused Tom Robinson, questioned Mayella about the event. However, it is evident that Mayella’s recollection of the event was not consistent and she ended up sobbing hysterically on the stand. The markings on her body seem as though they had been inflicted by a left-handed individual. Tom does not physically have a left hand, but Mayella’s own father, Robert “Bob” E. Lee Ewell uses his dominantly. Mayella may be protecting her father from facing the charges and hurting her more, but she threw the blame on an innocent black man who could easily take the fall.
The trial started off with the first witness Sheriff Heck Tate. Horace Gilmer, the prosecutor, started off with the questions. He asked what had happened on the night November 21. Mr. Tate said he was leaving his office when Mr. Ewell came “very excited”, he told him that some black man had raped his girl.
Almost everyone throughout Maycomb thought Tom was guilty just because of the color of his skin. But, the real question was, did Tom Robinson really abuse and take advantage of Mayella Ewell? Throughout the argument Mr.Gilmer used both Pathos and Ethos extensively
Bob has raped his daughter more than once as long as hitting her. The second reason on why Bob would lie is Atticus keeps asking him multiple questions making him seem suspicious and rehearsed. Bob stated, Along with Heck Tate, that Mayella was hit on the right side of her face making her rapist left-handed. Atticus had Mr. Ewell write his name down on a piece of paper proving
Today, August 26, 1935 in Maycomb county, is the day of the trial for Tom Robinson and we have a big update. We have already had a couple of witnesses speak, Mr. Heck Tate and Mr. Ewell. Beside that, we are here because Mr. Ewell has brought us all here today accusing Tom Robinson of raping his daughter Mayella. We find out that Mayella had bruises all over her body and was hit in her right eye. When Atticus was questioning Mr. Ewell, he asks him to write his name on an envelope.
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. The people involved in the trial are Bob and Mayella Ewell, Tom Robinson, and Atticus Finch, who is defending Tom. In the trial, Bob Ewell tries to get revenge on Atticus and his family. Bob is called to testify, this reveals Bob’s true character. We learn that Bob Ewell drinks, he leaves his family for numerous days at a time, he also can get violent, and he may even be the perpetrator of raping Mayella.
As I watched in silence when Mr, Heck Tate conversed with Atticus on the front porch of our house, I started to fathom the reasons behind why Mr. Tate wishes to keep this incident concealed. Throughout my life, I always perceived Atticus to be a man of justice, who can understand and assist any man in need. However, during the discussion between them, I observed his personality to be narrow minded and stubborn, which “was quiet and rarely evident, but… as set as the Cunninghams” (366). Furthermore, I noticed “his age was beginning to show, his one sign of inner turmoil” (383). At that instant, I understood Atticus’s reasons for being inflexible.
