During the time period of 1750 to 1776, the colonists, to a moderate extent, identified as American. In determining why a vast majority identified as American and why some didn’t, one must look into detail the social, political and economic standpoints that led to such divide. Throughout all 3 points, Thus, the identification of being “American” and its usage depended on the view the person had of Great Britain. In the economic standpoint, due to the “No taxation without representation” slogan being violated by the British, most of the colonists weren’t against the anti-British sentiment boiling up due to the conflict. The ensuing increase in tax acts later led to the practice of tar and feathering tax collectors, and, to a bigger scale, the Boston tea party.
When I think about the Seven Army Values and the Warrior Ethos so many brave men come to mind. For this paper I’ll be telling you about SPC Kyle White. A United States Soldier who took to heart those seven values and the Warrior Ethos. In any line of work you should always strive for to follow these “guidelines” but I feel that it is especially important in the military and it really is the backbone of how we should do our jobs. They should always be in the back of your mind and with every decision you should be able to say “What I’m doing follows these values.”
Accountability coincides with expectations, if something is expected from a subordinate and they do not meet that expectation, it is a problem. The book “Black Hearts” mainly focuses on an atrocious offense that took place in Iraq during March of 2006. Four United States Soldiers were under the influence of alcohol while guarding a traffic control point. While drunk on post, the soldiers planned to commit a crime. The soldiers left their assigned guard post in the cover of the night and made their way to a house in a small Iraqi village.
Almost as soon as the First World War ended the US retreated into isolationism just like George Washington wanted the country to do when he spoke about it in his farewell address. Many people were content with being an isolationist country because they did not want their country to get caught in another huge European war; this is the reason the US ultimately decided not to join the League of Nations which the US proposed to Europe. In “Rough Justice: A Caning in Singapore Stirs Up a Fierce Debate about Crime and Punishment” by Alejandro Reyes, the author uses statistics, logic, and facts to build his argument supporting Singapore’s justice system that focuses on “a sense of personal responsibility” (Reyes 182). Unlike “Rough Justice,” the editorial, “Time to Assert American Values,” lacks logic but still attempts to convince readers of going against Singapore’s caning policy. Every person as a citizen in america has responsibilities to his or her country. Many people complain and gripe about the state our country is in today. How can you change anything if you do not pull your own weight and strive to make the country better? I envision a nation our founding fathers would have expected to emerge from the seeds of freedom and responsibility they planted in the American soil more than 200 years ago. America is a hopeful nation, secured and blessed by God and enlivened by faith. Where you go to your small hometown church every Sunday morning with your family or how ever else you worship your God or whoever you follow any way you want. This America leads the world in religious freedom, where faith is cherished and protected in private and public. It leads in family stability, where heterosexual marriage is the backbone of society.
“What Every American Should Know” by Eric Liu thoroughly examines the issue of cultural literacy and its place in modern America. It presents a convincing argument against E.D. Hirsch’s book on the same topic which included some 5000 things that he thought defined cultural literacy and every American should know. Liu argues that America has changed over time, becoming more multicultural, and to capture the cultural literacy of the country, no one person should sit down and propose what they think everyone else should know. Instead he suggests that in order to capture a contemporary view of the nation, every American should be involved in the making of the list. When you ask a non American “What does America mean to you?” , they will more often than not answer with hamburgers, obesity, NFL and Reality TV. In Adam Gopnik 's piece “Caging of America,” he discusses one of the United States biggest moral conflicts: prison. Gopniks central thesis states that prison itself is a cruel and unjust punishment. He states that the life of a prisoner is as bad as it gets- they wake up in a cell and only go outside for an hour to exercise. They live out their sentences in a solid and confined box, where their only interaction is with themselves. Gopnik implies that the general populace is hypocritical to the fact that prison is a cruelty in itself.
My Vision of America My vision for America is that people will to stop disrespecting this country. They don’t care about the values this country stands for. This country has been through a lot, and people do not care about the struggles this country has gone through anymore. There have been thousands of people killed to keep this country value of freedom.
For as long as I can remember, I have possessed a desire to help people, especially those who are less fortunate than me. This trait along with life experiences are what drew me to want to pursue a career in social work. I want to be available to provide support to people when they have nowhere else to turn. My experiences in social work have taught me to celebrate the small victories just as much as the big.
