Odysseus portrays those three heroic traits throughout his voyage home to Ithaca, which is why he is a hero. Odysseus is highly dedicated to his reputation and ego for the whole of his rocky and treacherous journey. From going up against a cyclops that is five times the size of him, to placing wax upon his crewmates’ ears to mute the singing of the Sirens, Odysseus is brave when he faces his fears and intelligent when he creates lifesaving tools from ship materials. A modern hero can be someone who saves a life or even sacrifices his or her own for someone else. Odysseus can be compared to a modern hero because he risks his own life to protect his crewmates.
He sacrifices a whole year, in which he could be returning home, in order to get them back. Instead of letting his men stay with lotus eaters, he carries them “wailing, to the ships” (Homer.) The three men want to stay with the Lotus’ forever after eating the plant, but Odysseus knows that is not true and restores their hope of going home. Odysseus is not only a friend to his shipmates, but he is a hero. His intelligence and leadership aids him when he saves them time and time again.
He fought for his honor with his kingdom and family, the Gods, and Circe. He survived getting his kingdom back, Scylla and Charybdis, and the Lotus Eaters island. And finally, he was very noble with his fatal flaw (pride) to the point that he admitted that he did something wrong. Throughout all of his travels I think the moral of it is gratitude. Because as Melody Beattie once said “Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for
Telemakhus The Odyssey, written by Homer, tells the story of the adventures of Odysseus's journey. During his return, Odysseus encounters treacherous waters, horrifying beasts, and angry gods. The story also focuses on his family and friends that wait for his return back home in Ithaca. One character that shows the qualities of a hero is Odysseus's son, Telemakhus. The heroic qualities of Telemakhus are patience, boldness, and intelligence.
The purpose of this is to bring light to the story and promote its wonderful history. Odysseus’ is a extremely brilliant and cunning adventurer. His first show of willpower was against the Lotus Eaters. We start when a wild storm whips the ship around for nine days until resting upon the coastline. The Lotus plant was offered to the men but unfortunately it did no harm outside of being an intoxicating fruit that would cause those who ate it to lose all memory of their past and loved ones.
In the epic poem, The Odyssey, written by Homer, Odysseus is equipped with quick- thinking, intellect, and loyalty which defines himself as a hero admired by ancient Greek society. Although Odysseus failed to keep his men alive, Odysseus is an epic hero because Odysseus displayed intellect and quick-thinking, and he also displayed loyalty throughout the journey. In the episode, “Cyclops”, Odysseus’ use of intellect and quick- thinking leads to himself and his men to survive for another day. An example of Odysseus’ intellect is written on page 379- 380 where he presents his name to Polyphemus, “Cyclops, you ask my honorable name? Remember the gift you promised me, and I shall tell you.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus is an effective leader in chapter twelve. A leader who has too much pride is now showing too much humbleness for what’s important by following all the things he has told to do to save his crew and himself. He does what he is told to do to save his crew and keep them safe. “ But now, fearing death , all eyes fixed on Charybdis now Scylla snatched six men from our hollow ship, the toughest, strongest hands I had, and glancing backwards over the decks, searching or my crew I could see their hands and feet already hoisted, failing, high, higher, over my head, look wailing down at me, comrades riven in agony. Shrieking out my name for one last time” ( XII 265-270).
In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer the main character, Odysseus, is an epic hero because he absolutely upholds all of the qualities of an epic hero. Some of the qualities may include courage, nobility, strength, confidence, and determination. Odysseus is always ready for an adventure, he is not scared of anything in his way, and he will stop at nothing to get what and where he wants. His curiosity has taken him on wild journeys, and many issues but he is always able to escape the dangers he encounters. In Book 9 Odysseus and his men came across the Island of the Cyclops, they were in trouble because the Cyclops wanted to eat them.
The Odyssey ~ Homer ~ Adventure, Epic Poetry, Folklore The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle ~ Avi ~ Adventure, Bildungsroman, Historical From opinion, the most memorable moment of The Odyssey by Homer is when Odysseus and his faithful men execute the daring escape from Polyphemus the Cyclops, son of Poseidon the Earthshaker. In this section of the epic, Odysseus presents his cunning and daring character, showing ingenuity and athleticism as well. The thought put into the plan shows the intelligence Odysseus holds, for no man could ever have in mind such a brilliant plan. Great athleticism is shown through the red hot staff, as he and his comrades pick up the heavy object and drive it into the single eye of the Cyclops. “They lifted up
Polyphemus trapped them all in a giant cavern with a boulder at the entrance so they could not escape. Odysseus developed up a plan where he tricked Polyphemus into getting drunk and then stabbed his eye, blinding him. Because of Odysseus’ cleverness, he was then able to then cling to the underside of sheep with the rest of his crew and escape the cave. In another instance, he evaded the creatures Skylla and Charybdis by himself for the second time. Using his quick thinking and cleverness, he evaded the broiling sea by “(Springing) for the great fig tree, catching on like a bat under a bow”, (Homer 224).
Odysseus unmistakably demonstrates that he is faithful much of the time. One occasion was the point at which Odysseus ' men fell prey to the Lotus Eaters. I says, "Then I conveyed two picked men and a runner to realize what race of men that land managed. They fell in, soon enough, with Lotus Eaters, who demonstrated no will to do us hurt, just offering the sweet Lotus to our companions however the individuals who ate this sugary plant, the Lotus, never minded to report, nor to return; they yearned to stay perpetually, searching on that local blossom, distracted of their country. I drove them, every one of the three wailing, to the shipsâ"(page).
Odysseus was a strong leader because when he and his men stopped at the island of the Lotus Eaters people there were feeding them an addicting plant that made all of them go back to the plant to find more and not want to go back home. So, Odysseus dragged his men back to the boat and tied his men to the ship so they could go back to the land of Ithaca. for example, this quote proves that he " drove them, all three wailing to the ships tied them down under their rowing benches, and called the rest: all hands aboard; come clear the bench and no one taste the lotus, or lose your hope of home ' '. Here Odysseus that show 's that he was a good leader because he did not give up trying to save his men and not let anybody eat any of the lotus so no one else would lose their hope of going home.
Find this monster and destroy the head with red eyes, While the golden eyed head is the only way you 'll escape with your lives." With that, Athena vanished and his men awoke. After consuming the seaweed Odysseus shared what Athena had told him. "Men, have we not been in this crisis before? We have completed task upon task without
Epic Hero Essay “The gods have tried me in a thousand ways. But my first name: let that be known to you, and if I pull away from pitiless death, friendship will blind us, though my land lies far.” In the epic poem “The Odyssey” by Homer, while traveling back from the Trojan War, Odysseus and his men were struggling to go back to their homeland safely after what they had done to the son of Poseidon.
