There are famous mega-events held in various countries in the world such as world’s fairs and the World Cup, which attract a lot of people. The best-known festival is the Olympic Games because many athletes who are from diverse countries participate in it and it is broadcast around the world. Therefore, it is no doubt that the Olympic Games catches a lot of people’s attention all over the world. In contrast to this popularity, Don (2010) points out that hosting the Olympics has more negative aspects. Hence, this essay will discuss if having the Olympic Games in 2020 is beneficial for their host countries and residents or not by looking at advantages and disadvantages. As this paper has mentioned, many foreign people would come to Tokyo so this fact would make people who live there worried about whether crime rates are surging. Actually, Baumann et al (2012) highlight that the Olympics are associated with approximately a 10% increase in property crimes. However, in the case of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, which are held in Japan and South Korea, residents never experienced an increase in crime (Kim & Petrick cited in Söderman, S & Dolles 2013). Therefore, there would be potential increase in crime, but hosting the Olympics does not necessarily have negative social impacts. On the contrary, the host city could spend its money on the Games’ security and police work for crime prevention including terrorism. In conclusion, this essay has revealed some benefits and drawbacks of hosting the Olympics. Major three positive impacts on the host city could be increasing tourism expenditures, the local’s high quality of life and English skills. In contrast, there would be two negative impacts there: costs for construction and maintenance of Olympic venues and an increase in crime.
