Never would they have imagined going to school let alone attending college but because of them I was able to attend school, graduate high school, and attend college. Because of them I had the amazing opportunity to be born in one of the greatest countries in the world and study to become anything or anyone I wanted to be. Because of them and with the help of the Clark Construction Field Scholarship I am able to pursue a degree in Special Elementary education with a minor in Human services and speech pathology and audiology. Coming from a low income family, living in a small town in India, I learned early on about struggling and surviving those struggles. I watched my parents working day and night to provide for electricity, pay for our monthly school fees so my sister and I can have a better education, and for the future they wished upon for their children. To further enhance this vision, my father decided for the family and I to immigrate to the US. Everything was different in the sense that I changed schools, learned a new language, had to make new friends, and learned the different culture. When I was a child about 12 years old, I did not recognize that obesity was such a serious problem to me because it did not affect my life too much, and I never thought about losing weight before. However, with eating much more food and did not do any exercises, I was more and more fat. Until I was 100 pounds overweight in 18 years old, my parents probably sensed that I had have to lose weight because obesity would cause many diseases which harmed health. It’s the last week of summer before senior year. Technically, you know that it’s a week like any other. Seven days, one hundred and sixty-eight hours, 10080 minutes, and a shit ton of seconds. But if it really was like any other week, there’d be no point in lying awake in bed at 3 AM.
Normally I’m not one to talk of my issues. I felt that they came from a place of weakness, and I never wanted to be perceived as weak. Instead, I’ve always been known as the kind of person who could crack a joke, make others smile, and always be there to help an individual in need. Couple these aforementioned positive things with my grades, and people assumed that my life was in pristine condition. However, no one knew of the problems I dealt with personally.
Katniss Everdeen, Luke Skywalker, and Tris Prior were teenagers when they first met their mentors; I, however, was born knowing mine. Since I was born, my mother has been my mentor. I’ve never thought of her as a mentor until now, but reflecting back upon my life I can see how she’s shaped my journey. I’m not a hero; I’m no Katniss or Batman. I’ve never had to overcome adversity or challenge the government.
In a world that idolizes technological advancement, it is easy to rely on it for almost everything. We go to work and school online, we shop online, and we socialize online, amongst other things. We’ve even implemented technology into basic human necessities. Smoke detectors, alarm systems, and even ventilation systems can now be controlled with apps. However, I believe that digital technology is not something we should implement to that extent.
“There is no need for you to be so stressed, just relax,” my parents told me. I’ve heard those words so many times it has become an echo. Their body language shows indifference in the way they brush it off as no big deal and how their body position stays the same. They don’t lean in attentively or reach their hand out to comfort me. I can’t be stressed, but I’m expected to reach the high standards my parents hold for me.
Pain is a feeling that is an inevitable life experience, no matter how young or old you may be it is something that you can never escape. Whether it be physical pain or mental pain it will follow you wherever you go. Many of the painful things that we have face we try to suppress, we think of it as something “unlucky” that happened to us, or blame ourselves or other people and try to move on with our lives. Those are four things that I am undeniably guilty of.
