I am meticulous. I am conscientious, analytical and exacting. This is how I characterized myself in the introductory paper for my course in theories of personality. The personality inventory included with the assignment diagnosed me with a predilection for empirical data and logical reasoning. It informed me that personality types like mine thrive in occupations that reward organization and accuracy. Its career recommendation was law. I had no plans to pursue an education in law when I began my undergraduate degree four years ago. I did not dream of law school as a child, nor did I experience a distinct, life-changing event that compelled me to fight for justice. Nevertheless, my undergraduate experiences were transformative. Throughout my certification, I was afforded opportunities to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to immigrants and international students. As a student teacher, I spent months tutoring an illiterate female refugee whose country’s gendered education policies had left her unable to recognize her own name in writing. Conversely, I also taught university-educated men who had been forced to take entry-level jobs because Canadian employers had rejected their foreign credentials. These experiences provoked me to expand my conceptions of justice and equality. They inspired me to pursue a career in which I would be able to use my education, not only to help those less fortunate than myself, but to affect change on their …show more content…
U of T’s diverse selection of clinics and public interests programs offers students unparalleled opportunities to gain practical experience and get involved in the legal community. Given my personal interests and professional ambitions, I am particularly excited by the prospect of participating in the Refugee and immigration law clinic and the David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights. Further, I have an abiding personal and academic interest in women’s issues; therefore, I would be interested in pursuing U of T’s unique Sexual Diversity & Gender Studies certificate
She says, “All my classroom instruction was conducted in English by mostly white teachers, who had very little understanding of our live or our world”. (Villegas, pg.2) She states that she feels caught between two worlds. To answer the demand of the Latino parents and community for more assistance, administrators offered the “Migrant Education Program”. However, this program ended up being far from educational.
My path to law school has began in my sophomore year of college, now I am ready for the challenges ahead with an eagerness to learn. I have discovered over the years that I embody the unique combination of activism, diligence, and courage beneficial for a legal career. I originally had an interest in pursuing a law degree as a student in the School of International and Public Affairs at Florida International University. At the time, I chose to major in criminal justice with the intention of becoming a defense attorney. However as I neared graduation I was not certain about a career as a defense attorney.
Throughout middle school, I developed a strong interest in law, which I never lost. Because of this, I began doing extensive research on the qualifications and prospective career pathways in law, and this sparked my interest in becoming a City Attorney. Due to my growing passion, I started taking several classes through the Northwest Iowa Community College to get a jump start on my education. Since then, I've studied a variety of psychology courses along with others like Social Issues, Introduction to Political Science, and Introduction to Criminal Justice. These classes have taught me an immense amount about our political systems, and I will be able to apply my newly-found knowledge in my future endeavors.
Introduction This paper is to define and understand who I am as a student and what direction I need to take to complete my degree and pursue a successful career in life. I was born in St. Ann, Jamaica to hardworking parents and I was raised in the catholic church. I grew up thinking about becoming a cosmetologist but as I become older my direction shifted to law. Unlike many of the other professionals, my passion as I migrated to the states was law because it is a great security aspect and my desire to be in the court room is always something I love, and would love to help people who are unable to secure a lawyer. I do believe with my desire and determination I can make a difference in this world: I can see myself running a law firm in years to come, once I work hard and put in the work.
If you were to ask me four years ago who I would imagine myself ending up like after high school, it would not be who I am today. The 13 long, and sometimes dreaded, years I experienced in school helped me discover the type of person I wanted to become. Finishing high school was the first milestone that I achieved as an adult and helped me discover my adulthood. Parker Palmer states student fears in his essay “The Courage to Teach” and Amy Tan discusses language barriers in her essay “Mother Tongue” which showed me how it was that I overcame my fear of rejection and the feeling of being ashamed about my mothers broken English. It is through their work that I can relate my personal struggles I encountered while finding my identity.
I am passionate about history, fascinated by politics, and in love with people. I strongly believe that my happiness depends on further enlightenment and unmediated engagement in an active, vibrant and inspiring community, such as Wellesley’s. I hope to earn a law degree
Learning to teach in a way that accommodates and incorporates multiple cultures, religions, and world views is an important aspect of a teacher’s job. Culture includes a person's or groups' “beliefs, values, and behaviours” and is “embedded in everything that we do” (James, 2003, 25). Canada continues to rely on immigration to function as a nation, consequently Canada is “one of the world’s major immigrant nations” (Ghosh, 549). In the five year period between 2001 and 2006, the percentage of the population born outside of Canada grew from a little over three percent to almost twenty percent (James, 2003, 179). Canada’s culture, therefore, is a combination of cultures that originate from across the globe, and they cannot be ignored.
After two and a half years of college I ended up in a Communications Law class and fell in love with the concept of attending law school. At that moment I suddenly knew I wanted to pursue law and become a family lawyer. I always feared change and thought I did too much, nevertheless I soon realized not to fear failure and diversity when something went wrong, yet to embrace the opportunities during those changes and accept
My career goal is to one day become a lawyer. My road on this career path began when I attended Queensborough Community College majoring in Criminal Justice. At the time my aspirations was having a career in law enforcement. After receiving my associate degree, I continued my education at SUNY Old Westbury majoring in Criminology. It is here, where I learned more about criminality from a systematic perspective; but also from a sociological view.
(2) A line that the writer could barely pronounce. Amy wrote this essay based on her life experiences and it radiates to many immigrant children who grew up in similar circumstances. She uses her essay to channel that discrimination towards people’s literacy skills is unacceptable and unpleasant. Tan highlights the influence that teachers may have on their students and to be open and considerate of their influence.
What makes me, me? “Culture is not a surface phenomenon, it is our very core.” -Edgar Schein. This quote caught my attention because of how true and relatable it is.

What makes me who I am? I don't like the thought that every detail of my essence and my being was meant to be only because that was the way someone created me; or worse yet, something connected to the timeline of my destiny that someone or perhaps something divine wrote for me. I like to think that every detail of me was slowly molded to make me the person who I am today. And each one of the features that emerged, changed, and finally settled within my personality have a background story. Therefore, if I have a unique personality, is only because I have a great childhood to tell.
