Same-sex marriage commonly known as gay marriage is the marriage between two people of the same sex either as a secular civil ceremony or in certain religious surroundings. Gay marriage exploded in the USA back in 1970 which sparked a huge global battle. Many people think that same-sex marriage should be illegal because it’s against religious beliefs, marriage is for procreation and it may harm the children. On the other hand, many people agree with same-sex marriage because it’s an issue of equal rights, tags along on our civil rights as a human and the adoption rate would increase. This issue about same-sex marriage deeply affects society because people may think that it will diminish the meaning of marriage to other people in society. This affects Canada because of what’s going on with Trump in the United States and how he wants to roll back marriage equity which will mean all the gays and lesbians may move to Canada where

Many same-sex couples seeking to get married were denied quickly when they were trying to get it to pass in the Supreme Court which led to a global battle. For example, back in 1970 two university students named Jack Baker and Michael McConnell applied for a marriage license but were quickly denied (“Gay Marriage Timeline”). Furthermore, after being denied they sued the court clerk named Gerald Nelson because the Minnesota Law on marriage made no direct comment about the specific gender (“Gay Marriage Timeline”).The issue hasn’t been fully solved yet because there’s still discussion on the topic around the world. For example, some countries have legalized it but there are others that haven’t due to religion and cultural reasons (“Gay Marriage”).
