Julia Alvarez’s poem, “Dusting,” is told from the perspective of a women looking back at herself as a child. In the poem, the speaker is addressing how her mother and her childhood self, differed. The speaker is itching to spread her thoughts through words while her mother does the exact opposite by erasing herself or keeping anonymous. In the literal sense, the main conflict between the speaker and the mother is that the speaker writes anywhere and everywhere she can, while the mother follows behind cleaning off all the marks.
Poetry is a unique form of literature. Poetry uses the aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language. Judith Ortiz Cofer’s work “The Changeling” depicts the exploits of a young girl “vying for her father’s attention” while her mother does not condone such behavior (2). The poem is told as a flashback, with the narrator recalling a memory from her childhood. It begins with the young girl describing a game she made so that her father would pay attention to her. Then she dresses up like a soldier and pretends to be a man as part of the game. Her mother disapproves of her dressing in that fashion and makes her change back into her regular clothes.
Poetry can tell many different stories. However, unlike the author of a novel most poets tell their stories in only a few lines. Poets accomplish this seemingly impossible task by using vivid language. They choose their words carefully in order to give their stories and characters life.
"Introduction to Poetry" by Billy Collins and "How to Read Poetry" by Gail Hemmeter both convey their viewpoint of understanding poetry. However, Gail Hemmeter's "How to Read Poetry" is more effective at conveying his viewpoint of understanding poetry. This is because he give a list of things to do in order to help understand poetry and he explains the different aspects of poetry and what they mean. In this essay I will be arguing why Gail Hemmeter's "How to Read Poetry" better conveys his viewpoint of understanding poetry.

Poetry may not always be easy to understand. In most cases it is not due to the author's writing skills and their use of literary devices. Introduction to Poetry, by Billy Collins, demonstrates that one should enjoy the happiness in life and not simply rush through life to find happiness. Collins emphasizes the theme by using many literary devices. Specifically, he uses a series of comparisons such as metaphors.
Poems are short meaningful pieces of literature that can be interpreted in multiple ways depending upon the reader at hand. That is what makes a poem unique compared to other literature pieces because in a poem the author tends to use figurative language to fulfill meaning behind their work. One poem “Love is a Sickness Full of Woes” by Samuel Daniel describes the pains of being lovesick. Published by Barbauld’s niece after her death, “To a Little Invisible Being Who Is Expected Soon to Become Visible” contains a message from a mother awaiting the birth of her child. An innumerable amount of poems have been written over the history of humanity. With so many poems, there is an inevitable amount of similarity in the poems that exist, but on the other hand a guarantee of a certain degree of diversity. Even with two poems that seem to be exactly the same, one might find that they have contrasting elements upon dissecting them, and vice-versa. An example of two poems like this are “The Lanyard” by Billy Collins and “The Gift” by Li-Young Lee. Both poems contain like themes, similar yet disparate tones, and differ in their language use.
Everyone has their own way to express it. In my opinion, poetry is something that is used to attract attention of others with its own tools which are rhythm and content.
