America became a more advanced and equal country during this time. The progressives were reformers who fought corruption. Business owners during this time were only concerned about themselves. (artifact 8) Child labor was still a very large problem.
In the United States there were countless reform movements that took place to help shape our very own United States. One of the most influential times of reform would have been considered the Progressive Era. Progressivism is put forth by many different historians, considered to be a movement created by various groups of people, in effort to boost their everyday lives by being more efficient and discard corruption. Historians like George Mowery “Progressivism:Middle Class Disillusionment” and Robert H. Wiebe “Progressivism Arrives” introduce us to these reformers as wealthier and higher class citizens in America. While Joseph Huthmacher brings up that the urban lower class are the people who stood up and provided the force for the reform.
The Progressive Era was a period of was a period of political reform and social activism in the United States from the 1890s and 1920s. There were a lot of people that were part of the Progressive Era. For example, National Child Labor Committee was created to promote laws restricting or banning child labor. The National American Woman Suffrage Association was created to organize the women’s suffrage movement. President Wilson wanting to ban child labor.
Many historians thought that the progressives came from the middle class. George Mowry asserted that the progressives were “self made men” mostly coming from wealthy families. A group of wealthy families helped make up the millionaires reform movement. Although, he thought reforms from the middle class made up the majority.
Between the 1890s and World War One, reform efforts started taking place by the progressives. The progressives were not a single unified group and even had some contradicting goals. They were middle class urban dwellers and some were women. The progressives wanted to end prostitution, Americanize immigrants, antitrust legislation created, women’s suffrage, and the start of prohibition.
The popularity of the Progressive movement in the early 1900's was due to several social and cultural changes in the United States. In the wake of chaotic reorganizations of the country after industrialization and urbanization, as well as the influences of earlier ideological movements such as Populism and Pragmatism, the Progressives sought to bring order and progress to society through central planning, social reform, and even social control. The intellectuals were understood to have the best interests of the people in mind, and therefore had the responsibility to intervene in society through the means of the state. The Progressive Era from the 1890s to 1920s was a period that experienced extensive social activism and political reforms across the United States. This movement was spurred by the heightened level of corruption and injustice of large corporations and in government at that time. The movement primarily comprised of “liberals who wanted to reform and regulate their capitalist society and not destroy it. " There were several pushes to make the political process more open and transparent. One of which was the adaptation of the direct primary elections and to grant the Presidents more powers to regulate new laws.

Although during the Progressive era, progressives sought to push the nation into economic advancement, it was actually President Roosevelt’s New Deal, that restored public confidence and created government programs that led to relief for millions of Americans after Progressivism drove the country into turmoil. The new society established during the progressive era lacked stability, cultivated a sense of despair, high unemployment rates, shrunk and ultimately crashed the economic system. Progressive Movement Moving on from the Gilded age, the Progressive Era marked its place in history in the early 20th century. This movement started to take off when famous journalists were exposing the corruption of the work place, and politicians. Many issues came about with suffrage, and segregation, thus, helping to enforce the 17th, 18th, and 19th amendments. The political system was changing and the population was growing, but what really shaped the Progressive Era?

Mowry, Huthmacher, and Gilmore talk about the social origins of the progressive reform movement in their articles. In these articles it talks about the progressives, how they were defined differently, and what social classes/occupations/ethnic groups did they represent. George Mowry talks about the objectives of the progressive movement in “Progressivism: Middle-Class Disillusionment”. Majority of the reformers came from the “middle class”.
During the progressive era our country faced many problems. The rise of substantial businesses caused industrial problems. Women suffrage, alcohol, child labor, and safety issues caused social problems. The necessitation of citizens in government decisions also caused political problems. Progressives were people who wanted to solve all of these quandaries.
Workers felt unappreciated and that without rising up against their employers, they would be left starving,homeless, or dead. Workers wanted more money, an eight hour workday, safe working conditions, and protection against wage cutting. A couple of reformers during the Progressive Era were Jane Addams and Jacob Riis. Both worked toward helping the immigrants, women, children, and the poor working class. Jane Addams was a reformer who opened a settlement house to help the less fortunate.
The progressives, wanted to create a society that acted as one. The idea of being an individual was something to be forgotten in order to create a more perfect civilization of order and pureness. During this time of the progressive movement, the rest of society began to reject it ideology of their message and goals of nonpleasure and work.
