Chapter 9 The Jefferson Era was between 1800 and 1816. It started with The Federalist and Republican Parties fighting an election campaign in 1800. Federalists supported President Adams and Charles Pinckney for vice president. Republicans nominated Thomas Jefferson for president and Aaron Burr as his running mate.
Another factor that presents injustices, inequality and prejudices the article From Notes on Virginia (1779), Jefferson address political leaders and argues not to free the slaves. At the same time giving reasons with giving an adverse distinction on the appearance of African Americans, Later stating that Black Americans is not intelligence and that they smell. In fact, Jefferson offers the belief that Black Americans were inferior to Whites and by making these statements pronounce of being ethically wrong that produce inequity. Granted there was various individual like George Fitzhugh a southerner indicated that the document referring to the Declaration of Independence meant all men created equal as it relates to equal possession of property.
My musings about Thomas Jefferson is, I have no issue against him for being a slave proprietor. His dad Dwindle Jefferson, was a slave proprietor when he was three years of age in 1746 that he could recall. Jefferson was nine years of age when he had formal investigations with serve showing him nine months out the year. Jefferson father passed on in 1757, when he was fourteen years of age, his educator took him under their wings for direction. I trust Jefferson had slaves of his own since he was mature enough to realize what truly matters to slaves and what it remains for in their life time.
While writing the declaration the problem Thomas Jefferson was trying to address was the unjust treatment of the English colonies. For the most part, the English colonies where bullied and not given the right treatment by England. As a solution to this miss treatment Thomas Jefferson decides that the colonies should run them self as a completely separate country. Even if that means going to war. Jefferson chose the evidence he did to highlight the unfair treatment of the colonies.

He says that the White think that African Americans want to be them and have their skin color and riches. But he portrays that they think wrong. He says in his appeal that the African Americans do not want to be their color because they know that they could not do the same harm as the whites did as of beating as they slowly die in the inside. He says that they have so much anger towards the white that the first thing that they would do is murder each and every one of them for the suffering that they bought on to their families of their kind. He would like to see them suffer the same way before they would ever become a white person.

Being an African American and part of an African American women discussion group I've been in the mist of many conversations where the following question has been asked: why do people uphold Thomas Jefferson so highly? when he did nothing to free the slaves. Unlike George Washington Thomas Jefferson,didn’t even have a dying declaration to free the over one hundred slaves he owned. It was rumored for centuries that Thomas Jefferson had six children five in which lived to adulthood with a woman he enslaved Sally Hemings. He freed Sally Hemings 5 living children from slavery, after Sally discovered slavery had been done away with in France.
Jefferson wrote Notes on the State of Virginia originally to answer questions from a French Diplomat. The document was written right after his term as Governor of Virginia. It includes a detailed explanation of the views society had on the African American race in the 1700’s, along with a proposal for the emancipation of all African slaves. Jefferson went on to explain that he viewed African Americans as beneath whites and Native Americans in all aspects of life, that racism was a natural occurrence in society, and that slaves should ultimately be emancipated. He was repelled at the thought of the Caucasian and African American races mixing, therefore he proposed that after emancipation they take leave from Virginia and migrate to their own

He wrote this piece to express his important opinion about the effect of racism and how he’s viewed as a man of color. He talks about his first encounter of racism when he was young man in college and was assumed to be a mugger or killer just because of skin. “It was in echo of that terrified woman’s footfalls that I first began to know the unwieldy inheritance I’d come into the ability to alter public space in ugly ways.” I feel that the author is trying to connect to his vast audience of people who don’t understand what it is like to a black man in society. Later he contemplated that he rejected or shunned by the white race collectively as a dangerous man.
In 1776, one of the Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson, was tired of how Great Britain treated the then 13 colonies. The people of the colonies felt betrayed by a king who abused his power and were not a priority. Thomas Jefferson, along with many others, felt that they should be treated with respect and given basic human rights to strive for “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness,” Declaration of Independence (Thomas Jefferson 327). Nearly two centuries later, Martin Luther King Jr. preached to The United States that the mistreatment of the people was still going on. The “unalienable rights” Jefferson spoke of were being denied simply on the grounds of appearance of skin.
Thomas Jefferson’s works and ideas laid the foundation for several key aspects on the limits of the United States government, the idea of separation of church and state, and the importance of personal rights. Jefferson wrote many influential pieces of literature which pushed the concept of having limited government power. Jefferson wanted America not to be like the European monarchies that fell due to religious strife, so he emphasized a secular government. Jefferson, following closely with the ideas of John Locke, stressed the importance of the protection of individual rights against the government. Thomas Jefferson believed that a government should have limitations.
“You were born into a society which spelled out with brutal clarity, and in as many ways as possible, that you were a worthless human being. You were not expected to aspire to excellence”. His letter also discussed the idea of discovering one's self not through the sentiments of others, but rather through the conclusions of oneself. I feel like he is not just cautioning his nephew, but the black community in general of such society. I believe that his letter was a plea to the black community to “accept the whites with love” for “they are, in effect, still trapped in a history which they do not understand”, while in the same token, not giving in to their stereotypes of black identity like his father did.
