The War of 1812 was a military conflict between Great Britan and the United States. It lasted roughly two and a half years, and was not an utter bloodbath, nor did it affect anything economically or territorial. Despite there not being a true victor of The War of 1812, the Americans proved to European nations that America was it’s own striving nation, and able to sustain foreign attack. Besides the two large nations, the only losers were the Native Americans residing east of the Mississipi River such as the Shawnee, Potawatomi, and Ojibwa Tribes. In the pivotal years of America’s development, all that the Americans wanted was to expand west, this led to Native American repulsion towards the white settlers.
For example, why would a female Native want to own a hunting knife if her job was to harvest the corn fields? The Natives also worked as a community, willingly giving away objects and tools that no longer served a purpose to them to others that needed them. The lack of desire for ownership confused the English colonists greatly, but also allowed them to easily take advantage of the Native Americans since they were not aware of the land they were sitting on. The only way that an English colonist could own land was if it was given to him by the Crown or if it was purchased from the Natives, which led to colonists making ridiculously unfair deals with Native Americans for monumental amounts of land. The French and Indian War altered the relations of the American Colonies and Britain through political, economic, and geographical issues. At the start of the French and Indian War the French owned a big majority of land but the during the war the French lost their land to the English. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 gave the English, the French land of North America (Doc A).
Just 29 years after the American Revolutionary War, America and Great Britain were back to butting heads. This time it was not over the matter of independence, but over a cluster of reasons. Little by little, the British were starting to disturb the Americans. These reasons included British attempts to restrict U.S. trade, the Royal Navy’s impressment of American seamen and the arming of Native Americans. James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans is a novel about the kidnapping of the British general’s daughters and a heroic rescue, during the French and Indian War, by the last of the known living members of a peaceful Native American tribe, the Mohicans. Although the storyline revolves around a male character, Hawkeye, the adopted white half-brother of Uncus, and son of Chingachgook, Cooper depicts the female characters, Alice and Cora Monro, with dated gender roles. However, Cooper's plot is insubstantial without Alice and Cora's plight. Cooper has designated the two sisters “only as projections of the male fears and desires” (Baym paragraph 2). Cooper depicts the women in The Last of the Mohicans with three key characterizations:
The Last of the Mohicans is James Fenimore Cooper’s best novel, having to grow up in a big household, dealing with his siblings deaths, and fathers; experiencing the pain at young age can spark his driving force to success. Introducing the characters, Hawkeye’s a hunter or scout for his team having a rifle named “ The Long Rifle “, he moves better in the forest instead of around society; connects more with Indians and whites like his friends Uncas and Chingachgook, but never claims to have any type of Indian in him. Hawkeye is more of a cultural mixture, being with both Indians and whites together. Next, Chingachgook is one of the last members of the Mohican tribes, but is also intelligent. Chingachgook is Uncas father, which happens to be the youngest last members of the Mohican tribe; Uncas begins to catch feelings for a girl “ Cora Munro “, but Cora leader happens to be Magua who is the books villian.
Have you ever noticed the minor details of differences and similarities of a written novel and a produced film? Some of these differences and similarities can be shown in the book, The Last of the Mohicans written by James Fenimore Cooper, and the movie adaptation of the book produced and filmed in 1992. Astonishingly, the book and movie portray the similarities of characters, weapons, and history. Where as the differences show scenery, clothing, and appearance. In the end, the movie and book are similar and different in a unique way.

The adventure novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written by American author Mark Twain, tells the story of a young white boy who is trying to find freedom from civilization. Along his journey, Huck encounters a slave named Jim who plays a big role in changing Huck’s views on racism. Considering that the novel was published shortly after the Civil War, the language used to refer to African Americans at that time is often seen as offensive. The risk of potentially offending somebody led for it to be banned from many schools. However, the book provides a first hand look into the mind of a person questioning racism despite society’s idea of it, as well as an educational opportunity for students to briefly learn about the struggles of living in that time period.
A calm community can be turned upside down when violence becomes apparent. This is just what happens to a small community in Maycomb County in the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, where the community becomes divided amongst right from wrong and racial bias. In the mad dog scene, you see Atticus defeat the mad dog that terrorized his small neighborhood. In this passage, the literary elements of conflict, character, and symbolism develop the theme of racism creates division and discomfort amongst all and must be confronted. First off, the symbolism of the mad dog representing racism shows that racism is disturbing.
The true horrors of the past are beautifully displayed throughout this incredible movie. The audience is able to see all the pain, despair, love, and heartache that the Natives had to endure, as well as the effect the Native peoples had on the soldiers and Europeans. Magnificently represented in a film that is titled “The Last of the Mohicans,” starring Daniel-Day Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, and Russell Means. Released in 1992, based on a novel written by James Fenimore Cooper which was published in 1826, the movie is a dramatic period piece that takes place during the French and Indian War. Although it is directed by Michael Mann, a white film director from Chicago, it presents the lives of Natives during that era very authentically.
The last of the Mohicans: Task 1 The book I have chosen for my classics project is named “The last of the Mohicans” and it is one of the many books written by the famous author James Fenimore Cooper . The book is set in Hudson river, north America from around 1757 and it is mainly about a scout named hawk-eye and his two Mohican friends (the last of the Mohicans). The plot is set during the war between England and France, and many of the Indian tribes are fighting the war for both sides. The Mohawks and Mohicans are on the English side while the Hurons are fighting for the French.
The Last of the Mohicans is a great movie. I have seen it before, but choose this movie to watch to get me an excuse to watch it again. The movie is about a tribe with two members left that adopted a “white son”. The white son ends of being the hero in this movie because he tries to save and protect the two daughters (Cora and Alice) in this film. This movie is set during the French and Indian War.
A common theme in "How to kill a mocking bird" is the theme of dealing with racism in the community. Some characters I thought were heavily effected by racism were Tom Robinson, Dolphus Raymond, and Scout. Racism is relevant is Maycomb through the experiences of these people in many different ways. They all effected the book in significant ways and showed that the effects of racism could be costly. The first example of characters effected by racism is Tom Robinson.
Life has a weird way of shaping us. If you think about it, if our lives did not go the way it did, we would not be the same person we are today. To Kill A Mockingbird is based around that idea; that our lives and the events that happen to and around us, is what shapes us as people. Racism was taught to the people in Harper Lee’s book to be acceptable. They didn’t learn it on their own, just as much as they learned to read and write.
