Autoethnography is a research tool that allows the author to better understand and interpret religion, culture, and beliefs by relating it to their background and personal experiences (Adams, Ellis, & Jones, 2017). The research article, “Conflict between Religious Beliefs and Sexuality: An Autoethnography,” by Carlos E. Gerena, was written with this purpose in mind. Gerena draws from his experiences as a Latino, a member of a family, and an active follower of the Pentecostal faith to explore the growing debate between religion and sexuality. Gerena also explores his own personal challenges with mental health and sexual identification and how these themes play an active role in his life today. In the Methodology section of the article, …show more content…
Gerena’s Pentecostal church was exclusive to his Latino community and the topic of homosexuality was frequently discussed. Through regular church attendance, Gerena learned that homosexual activity was “abhorrent and wicked” and, at a time when he had begun to realize that he was homosexual, he felt guilty and ashamed (Gerena, 2019). As early as age 10, he began to feel that accepting his sexuality would mean rejecting the religion that had instilled so many positive qualities, but accepting his religion would mean absolute condemnation. This led to a deep-seated internal conflict that God had made him gay as a sort of punishment for something he had done …show more content…
He knew that he was living a lie, but it seemed a lesser degree of sin than that of a homosexual. The constant hiding and lying gave way to emotional and mental stress. He prayed for God to make him heterosexual and even entertained thoughts of suicide. He became an active member of his church, but when rumors about him being gay became widespread, he was shunned. He was confronted by a member of the church that reiterated the church’s stance on homosexual relationships and urged him to repent. His brother revealed that he was gay during an argument and he was forced to admit it to his mother. Gerena’s mother stated that she loved him but that their Christian faith was firmly against that lifestyle. The rest of his family ridiculed him and accused him of being inappropriate. This led to a downward spiral wrought with depression, alcohol, shame, and
At the time he was a closeted gay kid but had other feeling about men. Around 14 he admitted his likings toward boys, not girls. He had been having “compulsions” about men. All he could think about is not being with them but being with their dead
David Von Drehle’s article about the recent controversy in an elected Kentucky Clerk 's office describes Kim Davis ' refusal to issue same sex marriage licenses and stresses that it is not her place to do so. In this article, David Von Drehle uses strong rhetoric to convince the reader that it is not Kim Davis’ place to refuse to issue marriage licenses. He starts out with the phrase “The heat around gay marriage is obscuring what a simple distinction this actually is. But suppose the Rowan County Clerk was a devout Hindu” (Von Drehle Time)

Even though his wife discovered his stash of gay pornography, this could have been a part of him trying to accept who he really was. In their memoirs Blankets and Foreskin’s Lament, Craig Thompson and Shalom Auslander express feelings of discontent towards the religions they grew up in: Christianity and Judaism. While Thompson becomes disillusioned with Christianity, Auslander’s view of his religious upbringing is negative from the start. Ultimately, Thompson and Auslander’s reasons for leaving their traditions both stem from personal and familial experiences within their religious community. The main difference between Thompson and Auslander’s experiences with their religions is that Thompson before becoming disillusioned with Christianity had been enamored with it..

He knew it wasn’t going to be accepted, because it was a sinful act to the priest and the church. Even though he kept his homosexuality a secret many, such as his classmates and his brothers, already knew because of the way he acted, dressed and talked. I feel it was just
Summary: This article is about a man named Jaime Prater who was born and raised in Jesus People USA (JPUSA), a religious community where the leadership clothes you, feeds you, educates you, and basically raises you. JPUSA were started by hippies who used to travel through the USA, but soon settled down in Chicago, and is now run by an authoritarian leader and councilship members. Jaime Prater was born into this community and thought of it as his family, but when he was 8 years old he was molested. He took it to the council, but they shut it down to stop spreading rumors and isolated him. In isolation, he felt lonely and scared for three and a half years, and left the comminity in his early 20’s after he realized that he didn’t belong.
He finally had the courage to tell his parents, which he had explained their reaction by saying this is when they “went into the closet themselves”. At this time, even being a parent or sibling of someone who is gay was hard and very often received the same negative messages as the family member that had the different sexual preference. But Reverend Lucas persevered, and through counseling and pursuing many books messages, Reverend lucas was finally able to grasp better what he was actually feeling and interpret his feelings. Reverend lucas explained that although many of the books he was reading was still the minority position, and attending a christian counselor was still not fully supporting of his sexual preference, he was able to finally accept
Julio’s comment about the treatment of women in the Pentecostal church shows how religion has manipulated women like Blanca into positions where they are expected to be directed and restrained by others. The inclusion of the pastor in the list of glorified roles shows that religion is held to such a high degree that it should be included on the same level of need as any other family member like a husband or child. Religious followers often have specific symbols that represent their religion in their lives or an object that they hold sacred because it represents their faith in their beliefs. However, the people of the Pentecostal church have placed their representation of faith into the pastor and made

I think the argument of this essay was about the love that author describes in the songs, and also, understanding the man and his music: his sexuality and his spirituality. According to the article, some people believed that Prince as one of the most sexual artists of all time. The main argument of the essay was how people judge prince and his work. The quote mention in the article “People may consider the work of Prince to be electrifyingly erotic” and “This is the erotic intertwined with the divine.
