Leonardo da Vinci was a man of both science and art, which in turn brought a curiosity to all that he did. He studied light, shadows, perspective and many other subjects that would help the images he was painting to appear more lifelike. He had many questions involving light and showing and how to portray it accurately on canvas. In one of Da Vinci’s notebooks he drew pictures of lighted candles showing the principles of light and shadow he learned. One principle being that a shadow cast at the highest light will be the shortest. He used linear perspective developing this technique allowed him to present three-dimensional images in his paintings. The use of light, vanishing points, color and spatial context is renowned in the painting world. Incorporation of perspective and soft colors brought the painting out of the symbolic and into reality. His use of colors and shading of soft images threw religious theme into the real and actual. The subject that I chose for my paper was “Art: The work of Leonardo da Vinci on perspective, light, shadows, and color in painting” . I chose this specific subject because I used to be an art major that didn’t really care for art I never really paid attention in my humanities courses so I felt that in a way this would redeem me for my lost chance at knowledge. There is a book in the library called Great Masters : Leonardo da Vinci that I found became the main source of information for this paper. What was the motivation that led to the discovery? There was no “discovery” of Leonardo da Vinci’s amazing work , from a young age his father recognized his potential and sent him to Florence to take on an apprenticeship for sculptor and painter
He used different shades of gray to show the importance of some objects. I believe the darker the object is; the more importance it has to the person represented in the painting. Some specific details also caught my attention, such as the castle the he painted on the back he made it so specific for us to notice what type of building it is. Another detail is the fence which is guarding the cemetery, meaning that this place is sacred and that no one should bother those who are resting there.

Monet is famous for his “series” of painting where he would paint many paintings at different times of the day in an effort to capture the changing settings of the scene. Monet did not wait for paint to dry before applying more layers because he believed that it was like “nature itself was alive on a canvas”. He used this "wet on wet" technique which created softer edges. Monet focused on the changes that light made on the forms and he tried to capture nature as it seemed to him in that fleeting moment.
