Leonardo da Vinci was a man of both science and art, which in turn brought a curiosity to all that he did. He studied light, shadows, perspective and many other subjects that would help the images he was painting to appear more lifelike. He had many questions involving light and showing and how to portray it accurately on canvas. In one of Da Vinci’s notebooks he drew pictures of lighted candles showing the principles of light and shadow he learned. One principle being that a shadow cast at the highest light will be the shortest. He was able to place and portray light in certain ways in his paintings to where your focus would be on one area of light and as you move your focus from that light you see the proper shading effect on all that surrounds
