Martin Luther King Jr. numerous rhetorical devices in the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” writing to clergymen who wrote a public letter calling King’s actions “unwise and untimely” and telling him to “wait.” Despite Martin Luther King Jr. using many rhetorical devices in his letter, ethos and anaphora are the most powerful, for they increase credibility and create rhythm and urgency. MLK uses ethos by letting the readers (clergymen) understand his educational status and his role as a religious leader.

A rhetorical device is a “ technique or word construction that a speaker or writer uses to win an audience to their side, either while trying to persuade them to do something or trying to win an argument.” In the stories “The American Idea” and “Keep Memory Alive” the author uses lots of rhetorical devices for the readers to understand.

In the play Antigone, Sophocles demonstrates the conflict between family and God through the characters of Antigone, Ismene and Creon. Antigone being ambitious and strong willed throughout the play, fights for his brothers honor and proper burial while Ismene on the other hand, is more timid fears the consequences that may occur if the laws are broken. For Creon he is the King and holds most power, until the Gods feel he is incapable. Antigone, Ismene and Creon all use logical and emotional appeals to achieve a compromise to either bury Polynices or not.

It allows readers to gain a better understanding of the characters. Arthur Miler, the author of The Crucible, highlights the importance of mass hysteria through rhetorical appeals. John Proctor, the tragic hero is a loyal, honest, and kind-hearted individual.
The Crazy Iliad In life a very good skill to have is to be able to persuade people because it can help out someone in the future of their life situations. This skill is also important when going into war, and persuading people to fight or agree on something someone believes is true. In the Iliad, Homer’s characters’ use persuasion against each other multiple times in the story. The characters in the Iliad mostly use ethos, pathos, and logos when persuading each other to understand what they believe is true.
Rhetoric in the Speeches of Brutus and Antony The death of Caesar is a controversial topic and was even more controversial at the time of his funeral when when senators were trying to benefit from his death by getting the Roman citizens on their side. At Caesar’s funeral, two senators gave speeches as an attempt to get the roman people on their side. Out of the two speeches, Marc Antony’s speech was more effective because of his use of appeals and biases, being 100% true and had a larger variety of rhetorical devices.
One example of this was when the author used personification to describe the desert towards the end of the piece. Personification is when the author uses human characteristics to describe non-human objects. He described the desert as a beautiful brown color, much like that of a person's skin color. Another example of a rhetorical device that I noticed was polysyndeton, which I found quite noticeable throughout the reading because the author used it multiple times. Polysyndeton is when the author uses a repetitive amount of a certain conjunction to emphasize a certain point.

He desperately wanted the crown. They knew that if he became king, Julius Caesar would be a tyrant. To avoid the problem, they assassinated him altogether.

After his murder Antony, fearing for his life sympathized with the conspirators, but he became determined to prove they were criminals. The great and “honourable” Brutus and Cassius, talk to the crowd of plebeians, to announce the death of Caesar and to justify the terrible crime. Antony gave Caesar 's funeral speech, was not involved in the murder, but he declared loyalty to the murderers, but he still remained loyal to Caesar.
