The prospect of coming to the New World appealed to many people who wanted to join the colonies. Each colony was unique but some were more successful than others. In 1607, the Virginia Company sent 104 men to North America to start a colony. Soon after arriving they found a place to settle in Virginia. They named the colony Jamestown after King James I. Jamestown became the first permanent English settlement in North America.
Jamestown. Jamestown was the first established colony by England, after one of there earlier colony disappeared. The voyage from England to Jamestown was very long and rough the 3 ships carried 144 men and boys who would become the first settlers. The ship crashed and luckily they swam ashore alive, but because of their unawareness Indians attacked them, although they fought them off, there was a big insecurity among them.

Loving v. Virginia, 388 U.S. 1 (1967) Facts of the case: In 1924, the state of Virginia passed the Racial Integrity Act of 1924 which banned the marriage between a white person and a person of color. The law only targeted interracial marriages that consisted of a white person and a non-white person. The act had additional provisions that penalized the travel out of state for purposes of marriage between a white person and person of color; upon return to Virginia, the marriage would be subject to Virginian law. In Virginia, people mostly focused on growing of staples and exotic crops for cash. The crops that they grew in their colony were rice, indigo, and tobacco. But in Virginia, tobacco was the crop that they focused on, in fact, tobacco was the first most famous staple crop grown and became their economic foundation. As far as working in the fields, Virginia started off with indentured servants to perform the labor, but as they became expensive they shifted to purchasing slaves. Mortality rates were higher because of diseases that many of them came in contact with, men were expected to live to forty and women weren’t expected to live past their thirties.

Many of us came over on ships, navigated by notable individuals such as John Smith, Samuel de Champlain, and Martin Pring. Pring came over in 1603 to Portsmouth, Champlain in 1605 on the coast, and Smith in 1614 on the Isles of the Shoals. When we finally got our independence the people were scared. They were scared about how things would work. They were scared about how the newly formed government would protect the rights/liberties if its citizens. There were laws and documents that were signed to make sure that everyone one was treated right.

New England was a colony that was settled because the people that came from England wanted to find their freedom from their country. The people that came to the United States was to find freedom through religion, which the people from Mother England were not given the freedom to pursue their religious believes. The first settlement in New England was when John Winthrop came to the United States. In this settlement came the founders of the colony of New England. Basically the people from the first settlement were the ones that set up the way that the people were going to live and the type of government that they were going to establish and follow.

In 1607, the first wave of colonial settlers arrived in Virginia and began to establish Jamestown. Many of the new settlers came from wealthy families never performing a day of manual labor. With agricultural farming, being the revenue source of the new colonial settlers there would soon be a great demand for labor. Contracts of indentures were expiring and with much devastation in England, there was a shortage of English servants.
The colonies of Massachusetts and Virginia were a start of the new world for England. These were founded by similar people but, with their strikingly differences, grew into separate political, economic and social structures. Both settlements arose from over-crowdedness in England: people wanted a better life. Virginia was settled by men who were single and looking for opportunities and wealth. They were part of the Anglican religion.
The Virginia colony intended to reproduce into an English society when they settled. With tobacco becoming a huge crop in Virginia, they invested heavily in servants to help with the plantations, “Our principal wealth…. consisteth in servants.” (Takaki 53). Whites
The three main colonies that we hear about are Virginia, Plymouth, and Massachusetts. These three colonies basically define all the others, as each group and its main founder either went for a personal financial gain or to escape religious persecution. Virginia was originally settled by Captain John Smith and grew into a successful trade colony through tobacco. Plymouth was originally founded by the Separatists and was lead by William Bradford. Eventually the dwindling Plymouth joined with Massachusetts which was originally Puritan based.
