Romeo And Juliet Act 3 Scene 1 Summary

Tybalt sent a letter to Romeo saying that there is going to be a battle between the two, but the letter never gets to Romeo. Mercutio is the one who gets the letter and does not tell Romeo. When Tybalt comes to battle Romeo, Mercutio tries to distract Tybalt, so he will not try to fight Romeo, and he gets killed. Romeo is angry with Tybalt, because of what he did to Mercutio, and ends up killing Tybalt. He then felt regret right after he did this, because they are now related through marriage.

In doing this, Mercutio is killed by Tybalt all because Mercutio tried to honor Romeo. In this quote Tybalt shames Romeo for not accepting his challenge for a duel. “Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford No better term than this:

After the news of Romeo being exiled is delivered to Juliet, Juliet breaks down. The nurse then tells Juliet she will “find Romeo/ to comfort [her]” (52).   The nurse once again takes action to bring Romeo

At first Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio are having a talk but then Tybalt and a few other Capulets come into the scene. Capulets sees Romeo and challenges him to a fight, but Romeo refuses and tells Tybalt that he loves him for reasons that he can't explain. Tybalt eagerly proceeds to challenge him to a fight but as Romeo keeps refusing Mercutio then challenges Tybalt thinking that Romeo is too scared to spar with Tybalt. Mercutio says, (III.1.69) “O calm, dishonorable, vile submission! Alla stoccata carries it away.”

Romeo acts as an arbitrator between Tybalt and Mercutio because he understands the repercussions of the impending clash. He tries his best to reason with Tybalt by saying “I do protest, I never injured thee, But love thee better than thou canst devise.” Meaning that he won 't fight because he is related to him through marriage. Tybalt, not knowing of their secret wedding ignores Romeo’s comment, continuing his goading of Mercutio.

Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel and he declines the challenge and insists that he won’t fight Tybalt. Mercutio is angered by Romeo’s “cowardice” and takes on Tybalt himself. Romeo wants Mercutio to stop fighting Tybalt so he decides that it’d be a good idea to block his arm in mid combat and Tybalt stabs Mercutio from under Romeo’s arm and Mercutio falls dead after rambling about plagues and a pun or two. Romeo doesn’t realize that it is his own fault that Mercutio died after Mercutio even blamed his wound on him. Romeo lets his emotions decide his actions and becomes enraged and ignores that Tybalt is now his family and fails to see that he was the reason Mercutio was killed.

This fight between Romeo, Mercutio and Tybalt ends in serious matters. Tybalt comes up to Romeo wanting to fight him, but Mercutio steps in and starts fighting Tybalt. Mercutio is struck by Tybalt and as a result of this, Romeo says to Benvolio when everyone has left, “This day’s black fate on more days doth depend; This but begins the woe, others must end” (3.1.124-125). Romeo is furious at Tybalt for what he did to Mercutio that and he wants revenge so he goes after Tybalt, fights him and kills him. The Prince banishes Romeo from Verona as a consequence for his actions.

Acting quickly on his emotions, Romeo begins to fight Tybalt out of anger. When Tybalt mocks Romeo, blaming him for Mercutio's death, Romeo thrusts his sword forward in defense saying “This shall determine that” (3.1.136). He kills Tybalt just moments after telling him he loves him. Romeo kills his wife’s cousin without a hesitation, despite his attempts earlier to keep the peace. He does the opposite of keep the peace between the families, he increases the tension between them.

Mercutio decides to fight tybalt because Romeo would not fight back against him. Romeo is being a coward in the eyes of Mercutio so he decides to fight Tybalt on his own. “O calm, dishonorable, vile submission Alla stoccata carries it away. Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you walk?” (Shakespeare 1091).
