Countless authors, no matter the differences in their writing styles, subconsciously carry similar themes throughout their stories. This is evident in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. The theme of unrequited love and the fascination yet dislike for the wealthy. The main example of this in Scott’s work is between the character of Jay Gatsby, from The Great Gatsby, and Dexter Green, from Winter Dreams.
Jay Gatsby shares more than several common personality traits with Dexter Green. F. Scott Fitzgerald mirrored Gatsby from his prior character, Green. Both men had the will to create a successful life for themselves from a very young age, since starting from an unhealthy family. Each of the men wanted to be like the rich, who they had idolized, yet underlyingly were envious of them. Dexter Green quit his job as a caddy because he did not want to serve the rich, he wanted to be the rich. Jay Gatsby’s father found a schedule from his son’s adolescent years. Gatsby put his life on halt, he devoted his life to making it desirable for his summer love from five years earlier, Daisy. Gatsby sticks to Daisy through the good and the bad, yet, Daisy has a family of her own. This made it almost impossible for the two to be together, she says to Gatsby “I did love him once-but I loved you too” (Fitzgerald, 132), this was almost unbearable for Gatsby to hear. Her marriage made it next to impossible for the two to be together. Dexter Green was in love with a young promiscuous woman, Judy, who couldn’t even love herself enough to love him. Yet, like Gatsby, Dexter started building his life for Judy from the young age of fourteen. After all of their work and wasting their lives to create the perfect life for them, neither of the two got the women they loved.
