The KKK was out to get any person who helped during the Reconstruction. Northerners were tired of the South’s resistance. A state Senator of Caswell, John W. Stephens, was fatally stabbed to death by members of the Ku Klux Klan because he wanted change for America. People who wanted America to change were usually killed or silenced by organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan. Anyone who supported congressmen from the South who did not want to end this problem was “…a coward, a traitor, or a fool.”
It is seriously hypocritical as it is not fair for black defendants who are accused of anything. These similarities explain the racism, prejudice, and lack of justice in the book and article. It’s unfortunate that their skin color lost them their case for Tom and the Scottsboro Boy trial but that was the life of a black man in the deep south of the
The Reconstruction was unsuccessful because it was never finished and faced a big problem, the president get assassinated. The main point was to help the South been how it was before in terms of economic issues . The South was destroyed because a lot of battles of the Civil War were fought there. Another problem faced in the Reconstruction was the free slaves issue, after the Reconstruction had ended, freed slaves who had been elected to federal and state officials were quickly voted out, and the Southerners used violence and terror groups like the Ku Ku Klan to enforce the policies of the Solid South. After all, Reconstruction didn 't really help the South, and it was never a real Reconstruction.
This is because the north and south had different opinions on slavery, if you used the Dred Scott decision for slavery, you will receive no support from the north. So Dred Scott and slavery had a big impact on the north vs the south. When the Republican party was formed most people believe that it was formed because of the Dred Scott decision. This is because its ideas on slavery convinced them they had to form it.
Both Douglass and Walker maintained that the nation had failed to live up to the ideals of the Declaration of Independence but their reasoning was diverse. Walker believed that the author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, was a racist. He encouraged blacks to violently resist their masters and he wrote that blacks when faced with possibly enslavement should “kill or be killed” (Levine B: 792). Walker despised whites, categorizing them as “unjust, jealous unmerciful, avaricious and blood thirsty set of beings, always seeking after power and authority” Walker B:
They were had no desire for blacks to have rights and felt that they should be slaves. By attacking, burning their homes and killing blacks in the north and
Felipe Ferla US History 1: Lesson 7 The Reconstruction plan proposed by President Lincoln was a failure due to some factors regarding mainly the different mind-sets of the North and South. First, both in the North and South there were radicals that recurred to violent and extreme acts to impose their will. In addition, because, especially in the north they were a political party, they created laws that greatly affected the South and consequently the Reconstruction. Second, even though there were a number of laws declaring equality of black and white people, the population in the South still treated former slaves and colored people as inferior beings, limiting their work opportunities and preventing them from voting. Finally, and probably
Andrew Jackson’s sentiment towards the Native Americans was certainly not a kind one. Manifest destiny was a popular belief among Americans, including Jackson, and he would go to the extent of forcing Native Americans out of their homes to reach their “ordained goal”. He believed in the expansion of southern slavery which is why he pushed for removing the Indians west of the Mississippi, which makes it the more disgraceful. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 said that it will allow American government to offer in-state territories to the Indian’s for their western land. This wasn’t the case when the U.S. went in and drove the Indians out by force.
The reconstruction period was a failure because African Americans, mainly males, were not treated with equality although the constitution said that the they were free and had the right to vote, be educated and had the right to liberty, life and the pursuit to happiness. Organizations, like the KKK, were created to harm freed slaves and their families. Laws were created such as the Black Codes restricting former slaves from their rights. African Americans endured a lot of violence over the years. “In Grayson, Texas, a white man and two friends murdered three former slaves because the wanted to ‘ thin the niggers out and drive them to their hole’”.
The NAACP did it to Deneen Borelli when they wouldn’t allow her to have a booth at one of their national conferences. The Smithsonian National Museum Of African American History And Culture did it with Clarence Thomas when they neglected to feature him in their exhibits. The left has continuously tried to keep black conservatives from reaching their treasured voting base. That’s why they respond so aggressively when a black conservative manages to get some attention.
The south killed reconstruction because of their lack of interest in equal rights, their violence towards the north and blacks. “He was stabbed five or six
With no final agreement, the country had no other choice but to go to war with itself. The slow decline of the, once powerful, Southern economy and the major issue of the abolishment of slaves are what led to the cause of the American Civil War. While economics and political structure played an important role in the cause of the Civil War, slavery was the main reason why altercations arose. Many historians and teachers try to hide the fact that slavery was such a huge factor in the cause of the Civil War because they looked at slavery as the “norm”. To them, the differences between the Republicans and Democratic formed great disagreement.
According to document D many people argued that blacks were unfit to be government officials because they needed time to forget the things done to them when they were slaves and to learn “…true methods of gaining honorable subsistence…” The people of the North grew tired of dealing with problems that did not directly involve them, and reverted back to old racist ways which ultimately contributed to the fall of
Many people were homeless and had no money shortly after the civil war because there homes were destroyed or they were newly freed slaves. The reconstruction era was when the south was joining back with the the union and they were rebuilding their economy. The reconstruction was a hard time for the freedmen because they they had no money or a home and it was hard for them to find jobs to support their family. The reconstruction was overall an unsuccessful era. Politically it was alright because they made rights for the freedmen but economically and socially it was terrible Politically the reconstruction era was good because the government created rights for the freedmen so they weren't fully mistreated and harmed.
Imagine Being forced to work hard labor day and night for someone who treated you badly. How you you feel if you were forced into slavery and then laws changed to worse conditions? Four million African American Slaves may have gained their freedom, but the process of rebuilding brought the South significant challenges. Conflict continued between the North and the South as the whites resentment towards the South lead to violence. After the destruction of the Civil War, the United States an immense challenge of rebuilding.
