The Autobiography Of Malcom X, By Alex Haley And Malcolm X

Malcolm X 's "A Homemade Education" uncovers a story of how he gained knowledge by himself and how it guided his thoughts and ideas in becoming a more knowledgeable speaker. Although Malcolm X is a very outspoken person about racism in the United States and throughout the world, he had the right to be upset but goes a little overboard on blaming whites. The main focus of "A Homemade Education" by Malcolm X is his endless attempt to increase his knowledge by teaching himself how to fully understand different words of the dictionary. Although he was inspired by a fellow inmate when he was in Charlestown Prison, Malcolm, young as he was back then, began reading intensely but couldn’t understand exactly what he was reading because of his writing and reading skills. Starting from being illiterate, Malcolm X used every resource he had to broaden his language abilities and be able to communicate to the world and his people.

In his essay "Learning to Read" from the chapter "Saved" in Malcolm's Autobiography published in New York (Grove Press, 1965). Malcolm was born in Omaha, Nebraska and his father was a political activist on behalf of Marcus Garvey. After he and his family moved to East Lansing, Michigan, where his father was killed and his mother placed in a mental institution. he became an orphan and ended up on the streets of Detroit where he was known as "Detroit Red". Furthermore, Malcolm x was sent to jail where he was motivated to begin his homemade education by struggling to communicate with Elijah Muhammad and envying Bambi for his competence to assume control of the conversation and his stock of knowledge. For that reason, Malcolm learned to read by copying dictionary, beginning to read and comprehend books, exploring black history, especially slavery and studying world or global history.

According to Andrew J. Rotherham’s article “Actually, College Is Very Much Worth it.”he states, “Meanwhile, in 2010, the unemployment rate was 9.2 percent for those with only some college and more than 10 percent for those with just a high school degree, but it was 5.4 percent for college graduates.” The data Rotherham provides shows that even with some college education, you have a higher chance of getting employed than those with just a high school degree. The one group that outweighs all the others is the college graduates proving that with a college degree unemployment is less likely to befriend people who do pursue college. Some people might say that there are loads of jobs that do not require a college degree, especially in this time and age. However those jobs do not pay remotely has high as the jobs you can score with a college degree. In the article Benefits of Earning a College Degree written by EducationCorner they state “Because college gives you a broad range of skills, many college graduates end up in fields that are not what they studied in school. College can open up unexpected opportunities that aren't always there for those who haven't engaged in a higher level of education.”Even if what you studied in college is not what you pursue in life you are still going to have a better time finding a job

Life’s success is achieved in different ways. (Director, n.d.) A lot of television programs and magazines instills the idea in us that being successful means; having a fulfilling career, having a lot of money and being powerful. Most religious and spiritual organizations, in contrast, claim that success means being at peace with God and finding spiritual happiness. (Berger, 2013)Another idea regarding success focuses on a relationship. Relationships success involves spending time with friends and family and being surrounded. College education can assist in achieving some types of achievement. (Berger, 2013)However, it makes little or no difference whether the individual is successful or not in other life areas. Some professions such as medicine, law, engineering and teaching require college education. (Allen, 2011)However, some careers such as sports star, business person and movie star do not require college education. (Director, n.d.)These people are yet considered successful. As a matter of fact, achieving spiritual happiness and being surrounded by friends and family in a successful relationship has nothing to do with college education. (Berger, 2013)

Thesis: In “The Autobiography of Malcolm X”, Malcolm X in his telling of his life to Alex Haley uncovers the theme of positive and negative environments unearthed by the interaction of African Americans and White Americans in his life and what those kinds of environments inherently produce.

However, life isn’t that simple, nor is college. Short does have a point in saying, those with a degree will end up making more than those who don’t. The point that causes me to be uncertain, is whether or not the boost in income is worth it. This was the point Jordan Weissmann made. I agree with Weissman completely. Not everyone who graduates college will obtain a significantly higher paying job. Though it is nice to think that way, it is not the reality. Most students will end up making a small amount more than, an employee with a high school diploma. The topic continues to complicate itself with the point Tiffany Hsu made. She states how employers require a college degree. Most employers will ignore applicant without a college diploma. I agree with Hsu perspective that job searching will be made more difficult without a college education. Do I think college is right for everyone? No. However, I do see the value college has to offer. Though, you might not be able to make much more per hour, than say an employee with a high school education. But, college allows you to get the job before the applicant without the degree does. To me, a job is better than no job, and I view college as job

For many people, college is an important key for their future. Some people go to college for the job opportunities and the new windows it can open. Others go just for the education and experience. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints; in truth, it is a possibility that one's adult life could be much harder than people care to think. One can have better wealth, is less likely to be unemployed, and a much higher chance of being closer to your family.

Nowadays colleges grew up with the prices. Many people ask themselves do we need an education at all. In the articles by Steven Vogel, "Grades and Money," and Kwame Anthony Appiah, "What Is the Point of College?”, we discussed importance of higher education and value of GPA, knowledge.

A rising issue in today’s society is deciding whether or not college is worth the cost. There is an extreme amount of pressure that is forced upon high school students by parents, teachers, and peers to further their education and attend college. However, there is research that challenges the thought that college is the best possible path for a person to take. College may be a great investment for some people, but it is not meant for everyone. This is supported by the arguments that colleges are expensive, jobs do not always require a college degree, and students are forced to choose a lifestyle before being exposed to the real world.

Civil Rights and advancing of racial equality has been a major issue for many, many years and seems to still be today. There are periods of time when the intensity is at a low and periods of time when it seems to be very volatile. Sound our focus be on economic opportunities, as outlined by Booker T. Washington, or for addressing the disfranchisement of African Americans that Charles W. Chesnutt described. A broad educational background, permitting vocational adaptability and flexibility, seems more imperative but then one could argue that you cannot obtain that education without the representation and protection of our civil rights. Can a great education change things.

It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated makes people better, and happier in the future and sometimes even in better health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is good for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you 're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can make someone more educated and happier. Getting to that point is worth the

Our family can only eat whatever we grow on a small plot of land located a short way from our house. We have no other form of income so if we are unable to pick anything to eat from the land we go without food on that day. This happens a lot and we regularly go several days without any food at all. When we do pick vegetables from the land it’s very rarely enough for the whole family to be fed so my husband and I have to decide who will eat that day. You can see my younger children crying a lot, it’s because they are so hungry.”“The only source of water for our family is a shallow well situated near to our field. However, having a college education will give you a much higher chance for you to have that job you have always wanted,(the car,etc.). Therefore, what I am saying is that college is a great tool to become successful and it is better with it than without it.

The story” Learning to Read”, by Malcolm X, depicts how the motivation could push people further to achieve their academic goal no matter where you from or who you are. The author himself never made it past the eighth grade because he dropped out from the school. Of course with unemployment he got himself involved in criminal activity and later, be putted into prison. the life in prison makes him revalue his past and trying to stand up for himself in order to beat this circumstance. He taught himself how to read and become literate even all he could rely on is a dictionary, and the limit recourse obtained from the prison school. His success story also motivates me (as his audience) because afterward I could never blame about the education system

Knowledge is a very powerful thing that can change our lives. Today education is considered as one of the basic need of life along with food, shelter and water etc. It is a very broad word because with the help of education one can acquire knowledge. The basic goal of education is to provide pathway to the people which they need for a successful life.
