The novel The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitz Gerald embodies many themes. A major in the story is the pursuit of can be labelled the American Dream. The American Dream is defined as someone starting low on the economic or social level, and working hard towards prosperity and or wealth and fame. By having money, a car, a big house, nice clothes and a happy family symbolizes the American dream. The Great Gatsby shows what happened to the American Dream in the 1920’s, which is a time period when the dreams became corrupted for many reasons.

A society so “lovely" that it ignores issues such as systematic racism and misogyny, xenophobia, tax evasion or state tax avoidance, and wealth disparity.
The American dream has a different definition for each person, and in The Great Gatsby, each character has their goals for their American dream. Nick moves to New York “to learn the bond business” (Fitzgerald 3) after he comes back from World War I feeling the Midwest has nothing left to offer him. By moving he hopes to make money through his plans and achieve a level of prosperity that many see as part of the American dream, but many also see love as a key aspect of the same dream. For Gatsby, he can only find this love in Daisy, but five years have passed since he looked at her “in a way that every young girl wants” (Fitzgerald 75) creating blocks in the development of their relationship. During the gap years, Daisy gets married and “[has a] little girl” (Fitzgerald 77) starting her own version
Fitzgerald’s use of each character's desire for the American Dream shows that it is impossible to achieve. Before Nick leaves, he sees Gatsby reaching for “a single green light, minute and far away...” (21). Gatsby is reaching for Daisy--even after 5 years of waiting for her to come back to him. Nick begins to realize that the American Dream is unachievable because he sees that despite Gatsby’s wealth, Gatsby still cannot get what he wants the most, Daisy.
Nick Carraway once said “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter – tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther... And one fine morning – So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby to show the American Dream and what it truly means. The American Dream means that everyone has an equal opportunity to achieve what they want in America.
In the first passage, Fitzgerald explores the unattainability of the American dream through the portrayal of the elites, including Gatsby, and their wealthy lifestyle. Gatsby’s privilege is depicted when he wased a ‘white card from his wallet’ in front of a policeman to escape the consequences of his reckless driving. This exemplifies how the elites’ wealth and power allow them to be reckless without worrying about the consequences. This is highlighetd through Daisy and Tom’s careless and destructive nature, who retreat back into their wealth ‘let other people clean up’ their mess. As they leave New York, they leave behind the dead bodies of Tom’s mistress, the husband of mistress and Daisy’s ex-lover.
The novel ends on an irresolute note with Nick saying: “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther….And one fine morning——” (Fitzgerald 180). The “green light”, which serves as a symbol for everything Gatsby strived for in his lifetime, lingers even after his death, convincing more people, including Gatsby, that the American Dream is still possible. Even after his demise, he holds a strong faith in the American Dream and the fraudulences that sustains the Dream, which suggests that he is not great because he is still imperceptive of the quixotic nature of the American Dream.
