Throughout the epic, gods play the role of savior and tormentor. If Poseidon had not decided to attack Odysseus the story would have developed radically different. There would have been no life-threatening obstacle, but simply a path home. Of course this simply cannot occur, hence the fact it’s an epic.
Poseidon wouldn’t have killed all of his men, and they probably could’ve helped Odysseus a lot more. In the end, Odysseus didn’t show his leadership with Polyphemus. He not only revealed his name to the cyclops, but his father’s and his home. These were poor
Poseidon kept this promise as we know and kept Odysseus from home as long as possible. While yes all of this is horrible and was a mistake. We have to remember that Odysseus is human. People make mistakes like this all the time and it just reminds us that we aren't perfect and that is just how it
People usually say that gods are perfect and benevolent beings, but this is not always the case, some of those gods will actively stop you from achieving your goal. This is the reality of Odysseus from the Odyssey, written byHomer. In the Odyssey, Odysseus believes he does not need the gods, So in return the gods made his trip longer to prove that he needs them. On one of the islands he landed on, He blinded a Cyclops’ eye to survive, and because of that Poseidon cursed them. The question that is going to be answered is:Should Odysseus be considered an epic hero?
If some god strikes me on the wine-dark sea, I will endure it. By now I am used to suffering--I have gone through so much at sea and in the war” (5.219-224). Poseidon has been interfering with Odysseus and his men’s journey throughout the story just because he harmed his Cyclops son, Polyphemus. These obstacles that Poseidon has been placing in their way have made him want to go back home even more. “And she says that I alone should hear their singing.
It is presented in the beginning that Poseidon has strong hatred towards Odysseus. This hatred was showcased by Poseidon interfering with Odysseus going home, “The Earthshaker Poseidon would let me go no further, and raised a great storm against me; the sea was so terribly high that I could no longer keep to my raft,” (271-275). This hatred is explained by Odysseus blinding one of Poseidon’s son, Polyphemus. Polyphemus prays to his father to seek vengeance and that is exactly what Poseidon does. This is an example where a human outright does something to bring out a god’s anger, the only reason Odysseus is able to survive is from other gods like Athena having his back and supporting him, showing yet again he needed a god’s support to survive another god’s
Many people rely on a sense of linear time, oftentimes looking at life as a timeline of early years, middle years, and then eventual death. To deal with this, many may make to-do lists and attempt to “manage time”. This sense of time is known as chronos, named after a Greek titan who was overthrown by his father and cast into Tartarus, a prison for titans, where he still ticks. One is always able to feel the effects of the ticking clock, and time may feel like a burden. Despite this linear understanding of time, the Greeks understood that life is not a rut, and thus developed a different sense of time known as kairos.
Homer, The Odyssey, published by Mentor, New York (1946). Odysseus is best characterized as cunning for his creative schemes he devises to overcome the many challenges on his return to Ithaca. He greatly affected the main conflict in the novel by killing Poseidon 's son and creating the conflict; however, with his crafty personality he was conquer the many challenges he faced. Queen Penelope, wife to Odysseus, is very clever and stays true to her marriage even with the many suitors in her house and Odysseus departed for twenty years. Athena, daughter of Zeus, is best distinguished as being very altruistic in wanting to assist Odysseus by speaking up for him to the gods and disguising herself as old friends of Odysseus.
Throughout the story of Odysseus’s journey told by Homer, there are many defining examples of interaction between humans and their gods. The gods primarily interact with humans by either siding with or against them. The gods would often side with humans since they wanted to help them such as Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, helping Telemachus, Odysseus’s son, whereas the gods seeking revenge such as Poseidon, who sought revenge on Odysseus for slaying his son Polyphemus, would turn against them. While actual interaction between gods and humans seems to be a rather risible idea, there was much guidance given to humans by the gods throughout the Odyssey.
In the Odyssey, I feel as if the Gods role was to function more as spiritual guides and as support for the human of choice. An example being Athena reuniting Odessyus and his son after 20 years, Hermes warning Odysseus of Circes witchcraft, and Circes giving him directions. Yet, I also feel as if they punish for poor behavior as well.
In Homer’s Odyssey, gods and other supernatural beings dominated every aspect of mortal life. All living things and phenomena that occur in the world can be traced back to the gods. Seeing as how gods are responsible for the lives of mortals and the state of the natural world, performing deeds that anger the gods would prove to be disastrous while performing deeds that please the gods would prove to be beneficial. Odysseus’ journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War was took ten years due to angering gods like Poseidon and Helios. However, it was through Athena’s aid that he was able to make it back home.
In The Odyssey and Their Eyes Were Watching God, the two main characters go through non-linear processes of growth, in which they both must suffer in exchange for finding both their nostos and their nous. Both Odysseus and Janie are set on personal journeys to find their souls, though they find them in different ways. Janie finds her home with Tea Cake and their love for one another, while Odysseus physically returns home. Both of them complete a part of their souls by finding their true nostos.
Homers complex writing is devoted to the extend he gives on the perspective into the Greek underworld, stories in which were prevailing in the Greek society. The numerous conditions of the reality of the afterlife are deeply described rather than the setting of the underworld. The underworld is described as the House of Hades which is where your death and inevitable fate lies. It is signified in The Odyssey Book XI, concretely in the scenes of Odysseus mother’s death in the Cimmerians, the Greek culture expresses a depressing but inevitable view of death as a complete dichotomy of the fate but shows the indication of more than just one afterlife.
Poseidon, Apollo, Athena, Zeus, and Hermes are all Greek Gods that appear in the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer. These gods all play a significant role in The Odyssey by both helping and hindering Odysseus on his 10-year journey home. Homer illustrates the theme of divine intervention in The Odyssey using Poseidon’s wrath, Athena’s providence, and Hermes’ guidance. Poseidon is one of the main gods that appears throughout The Odyssey, Homer shows Poseidon's divine intervention through his wrath on Odysseus during his journey home.
The relationships between the Greek gods and mortals have always been complicated. The gods can be generous and supportive, but also harsh and destructive towards the humans. They claim to be all powerful beings with unlimited power and influence, but in truth, they are far more human than they are perceived. They meddle with human lives, not because they are wise, but because of their own selfish reasons. In Homer’s
