Throughout the novel To Kill a MockingBird Atticus proves his greatness as a father by teaching his children life lessons through everyday actions. In the novel, Scout and Jem go through many rocky bumps in their life, and with Atticus they receive a stable role model to lead them through harder times. Atticus being a lawyer could have made him into a very serious busy man who could have paid little to no attention to his young children. But being a lawyer helped mold Atticus and his children into well rounded and educated people. By the end of the novel Atticus has changed his children into disciplined and reasonable human beings.
Being a father must be hard, but being a father in Maycomb, Alabama around 1930 makes it even harder for the whole family. While Atticus is not a good father because he does not punish his children, Atticus is a good father to Scout and Jem. Atticus
Atticus Finch is the parent of two children, Jean Louise Finch, formerly known as Scout and Jeremy Finch, formerly known as Jem in Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus is considered a role model in the eyes of a parent reading the novel, but what they do not know is how ineffective of a parent Atticus Finch really is. Atticus Finch is an ineffective parent because of his lack of safety for his children and the inability to control Jem and Scout outside of their home. Atticus constantly endangers Jem and Scout into situations they should not be exposed to at such an early age. Without the supervision of Atticus outside the Finch household, they commit acts of anarchy. Atticus Finch is simply a pathetic parent.
One of the most powerful people in a person's life is their dad. This is an important philosophy in our society. However, opinions on what makes a father such a powerful figure in our lives vary. I believe a father must be strong and able to provide and protect the family. A father must be there for the family to lean on, they have to be the core of the family. Without each of these traits a dad is not good at being a father. In the story “ To Kill A Mockingbird” Atticus Finch is a very good father. Atticus is willing to explain everything to Jem and Scout. Mr. Finch always expects good behavior out of Jem and Scout. Atticus also provides everything for his family.
To begin with, Atticus Finch is a magnificent father to his son and daughter, Jem and Scout.
Start with Atticus; Atticus Finch is the father of two children, Jeremy Atticus Finch and Jean Louise Finch (Scout). His wife died before the book began back when Scout was just a little toddler. He works as an attorney and is often praise for his honesty and intelligence in Maycomb. Atticus was the defendant of Tom Robinson in his case against Mayella Ewell, who said that Tom raped her and beat her. He was the only man that would agree to do this and was given a lot of slack for defending a black man.
Atticus Finch is portrayed as great parent in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The way Atticus Finch acts at home and on the streets provide a good role model for Jem and Scout. He is a parent who always does the right thing and stays true to himself and to his children at all times. Atticus is a positive role model for his children because he is the same character wherever he goes and whoever he talks to. When Scout misinterprets Miss Maudie’s words she attempts to defend his father about how he does not do anything at home different than what he would do at work.
Scout (Jean Louise)- Jean Louise (more commonly known as Scout) is introduced to us as a young six year old girl who is innocent, but intrigued in the world. “‘If you shouldn’t be defendin‘ him, then why are you doin’ it?’ ‘For a number of reasons,' said Atticus. 'The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.’ ‘You mean if you didn’t defend that man, Jem and me wouldn’t have to mind you any more?’ ‘That’s about right.’ ‘Why?’” (Lee 78). This shows that Scout is determined to learn as much as possible about the world.
Atticus is a very complex character in To Kill A Mockingbird. There are two main reasons to dignify him from other people in Maycomb. Atticus is a very calm man especially in a intense situation. Two ways to prove that he’s calm is, Atticus is a good father, and Atticus is a good person. To make Atticus a good father he helps Scout with her problems at school and throughout her life. In the beginning of the novel Scout struggled with her teacher, Miss Caroline. Scout would get in trouble for knowing how to read, so her teacher forbid her to read at home with her father. Scout was devestated with the fact of getting and trouble, but not being able to read with Atticus anymore made it worse. Atticus made a deal with her that if she promised not to tell her
As a father Atticus has done everything he can to maintain his children, Jem and Scout, informed of what really is like out there in the real world. Honesty seems to be Atticus rout when dealing with life. In times Atticus will lose trial but the courage he has won’t allow him to give up on innocent people, like Tom. Atticus is the definition of role model to follow. He’s a great father to his children showing the the truth will always push them forwards in life.
He works hard to be a good father and set a good example for his kids. When it comes to parenting, Atticus Finch treats his kids like his equal. For the most part, he gives Jem and Scout independence to make their own decisions so they can learn based on their experiences. He believes in teaching his kids what they did wrong and making them fix it instead of punishing them. He is also brutally honest.
Atticus Finch shows many ways of wisdom throughout the novel. He tells Scout to respect Boo Radley and to understand the fact that their might be reason why Boo always stays at home. Atticus states in the novel, “You never truly understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-until you climb into his skin and walk around it” (Lee, 39). This evidence supports why Atticus is a wise individual who always tries to see things from other people’s point of view. He does not judge people right away because of their actions. Miss Stephanie Crawford also states, “Mr.Ewell approached him, cursed him, spat on him, and threatened to kill him” (Lee, 291). After all that Mr.Ewell has done to Atticus, he does not bat an eye. Atticus was
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is a role model not only for Scout and Jem, but for the town as a whole. He is unbiased and just in his values, and this carries over to his parenting with Jem and Scout. Atticus always listens to what his children have to say, and they greatly respect him for it. He instills in them that it is okay to stand up for what they believe in, even if the rest of society shuns them for it. They are taught to treat other people with respect and to always think before acting.
Harper Lee in, To Kill A Mockingbird shows many different types of parents. As a single father, character Atticus Finch stands out the most. He shows he is a good parent as he provides important life lessons to his children and others. He shows fairness to others and his kids especially. Lastly he shows that you should always stand up for others no matter what.
He is a talented man, he is good at a variety of things from being the best checker player in the town to being an honest and fair lawyer, and he can even play the Jew’s harp. Atticus is seen as a great father even though the odds are against him he does not give up therefore he is admired and respected for his courage. His attitude and personality does not change. For instance Miss Maudie says, “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets” As a parent Atticus has a special way of teaching values he not only tries to explain how to behave but also why to behave in that way. Instead of telling and stating instructions what is wrong and right he uses real life occasion as a medium.
