Atticus Finch Is A Good Role Model Essay

Atticus is a very complex character in To Kill A Mockingbird. There are two main reasons to dignify him from other people in Maycomb. Atticus is a very calm man especially in a intense situation. Two ways to prove that he’s calm is, Atticus is a good father, and Atticus is a good person. To make Atticus a good father he helps Scout with her problems at school and throughout her life. In the beginning of the novel Scout struggled with her teacher, Miss Caroline. Scout would get in trouble for knowing how to read, so her teacher forbid her to read at home with her father. Scout was devestated with the fact of getting and trouble, but not being able to read with Atticus anymore made it worse. Atticus made a deal with her that if she promised not to tell her

Throughout the novel To Kill a MockingBird Atticus proves his greatness as a father by teaching his children life lessons through everyday actions. In the novel, Scout and Jem go through many rocky bumps in their life, and with Atticus they receive a stable role model to lead them through harder times. Atticus being a lawyer could have made him into a very serious busy man who could have paid little to no attention to his young children. But being a lawyer helped mold Atticus and his children into well rounded and educated people. By the end of the novel Atticus has changed his children into disciplined and reasonable human beings.

Jean Louise Finch ‘Scout’ is a headstrong young girl who narrates the novel ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’, set in the fictitious County Maycomb over the span of three years. She is often found sporting dirty overalls or breeches and possesses a rather tomboyish personality, much to her aunt’s dismay. It says, “Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire... When I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasn’t supposed to be doing things that required pants.”(Page 90)

In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird there are some very courageous characters. The most courageous would be Atticus Finch. Atticus is one of the main characters in the book. He is the father of the narrator. He is also one of the best lawyers is the county.

Mary Sarton explains that,”One must think like a hero to behave like a merely decent human being”. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the more prominent figures in the book is the father of Scout and Jem, Atticus Finch. He serves as the voice of reason for the audience, his children, and himself. He gives life lessons to both Scout and Jem that shape who they are as a person, especially towards the end of the novel with the encounter of Bob Ewell and Boo Radley. Throughout the novel, Atticus symbolizes the virtue of humility. These traits are especially prevalent in the events of the rabid dog, the encounter with Mr. Ewell after court, and the death of Mr. Ewell.

Personal values and morals are instilled into children by their parents . Jem and Scout Finch, characters from Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, are open minded, educated, young children that have a father named Atticus Finch who tries to teach his children to have sound morals and personal values . The children have not been sheltered from life's hardships due to their father Atticus's views on parenting instead they have learned right from wrong. Atticus Finch believes that not sheltering his kids from the world allows them to form strong morals and values. Atticus Finch does what he believes will help make his children into strong citizens with outstanding values and morals.

As a father Atticus has done everything he can to maintain his children, Jem and Scout, informed of what really is like out there in the real world. Honesty seems to be Atticus rout when dealing with life. In times Atticus will lose trial but the courage he has won’t allow him to give up on innocent people, like Tom. Atticus is the definition of role model to follow. He’s a great father to his children showing the the truth will always push them forwards in life. Not only that he believe everyone in this world is a mockingbird who isn’t truly known till walked in their shoes. LAstly his pride in taking a stand for someone who only has hope in himself is beyond exceptional for anyone else. Finally remember to treat other the way you want to be treated and don’t just assume, become them for a minute

Atticus Finch is the father of Jem and the scout, he was passionate about many things, but the one thing he showed most passion for was being true to himself and his kids. In the book he is portrayed as a good man of Maycomb city. Being true to himself and his kids means he will fight for his beliefs and be honest even when things are ugly.

Atticus Finch is the parent of two children, Jean Louise Finch, formerly known as Scout and Jeremy Finch, formerly known as Jem in Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus is considered a role model in the eyes of a parent reading the novel, but what they do not know is how ineffective of a parent Atticus Finch really is. Atticus Finch is an ineffective parent because of his lack of safety for his children and the inability to control Jem and Scout outside of their home. Atticus constantly endangers Jem and Scout into situations they should not be exposed to at such an early age. Without the supervision of Atticus outside the Finch household, they commit acts of anarchy. Atticus Finch is simply a pathetic parent.

Every day in our lives, heroes are all around us. They may not be what society tells us is a hero, like Superman or Batman. They do not wear fancy costumes or have super powers. But these heroes change the lives of the people around them, for the better. Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird is the charismatic, understanding father of Scout and Jem Finch as well as a hard working lawyer in Maycomb County, Alabama. Despite racial inequalities in the South, Atticus sticks to his own morals and agrees to be the defending lawyer for Tom Robinson, a black man being accused of raping a white woman. Although Atticus’ defense in court was thorough and clearly proved Tom’s innocence, the jury was prejudiced towards black folks and convicted Tom as guilty. Nonetheless, Atticus is still a hero despite losing the case. He has the courage to stand up for what he believes in, fights with reason rather than guns, and has utmost determination, making him a hero despite being just an average human being. Ultimately, his thoughts and actions set the stage for major changes in the meaning of equality throughout Maycomb County, changing lives of numerous people.

The way Atticus treats people sets a good example for his children to follow, allowing them to see how one should be treated no matter what race or gender one is. “...until I thought if Boo Radley ever received it he would not be able to read it. I was looking down the street when the dinner-bell rang.” (Lee, 49). In this situation, Atticus tries to defend Boo when the kids try to mess with him. Atticus thinks that the kids should not mess with Boo because his property is his property, and the children would not want someone “playing tricks” in their yard, and treating them differently than anyone else. Jem and Scout state that “they want to keep it that way” (Lee, 57) meaning they do not want Atticus to punish them for what they did. If they act the way they should, then Atticus would not have to punish them. Atticus is a good father that teaches his children to treat everyone equal.

Her school teacher, Miss Caroline, tells her that she cannot read at home because her father doesn’t know how to teach. After confronting Atticus about her problem he says that “[People] never really understand a person until they consider things from his point of view” (39). This is a lesson about considering things from another person’s perspective, which is good for Scout to learn because she tends to judge people based on their looks or ways of doing things. This lesson will help her in real life because before she judges someone, considering their point of view will help her understand other people’s opinions. To end, Atticus teaches Scout a lesson about seeing things from others perspective.
