“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy…but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." The title To a Kill Mockingbird means to destroy someone’s innocence. In Harper Lee’s To Kill Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is a white lawyer who decides to defend Tom Robinson, a black man who has been accused of raping a white woman. The setting of the story is Maycomb County Alabama during the 1930s, a time when racism was at its strongest. The main characters who symbolize the mockingbird are Tom, Boo, and Jem. These characters are innocent people who have been injured or destroyed through contact with evil. Lee portrays innocence in many ways. Innocence can mean freedom from guilt …show more content…
Boo Radley as a kid was locked up in his house all his life because of his strict father. So Scout and Jem thought of him as monster because they believed the rumors and stories that they heard. However, the rumors are put to rest when Boo’s character emerges. He is really very kind to to Jem and Scout. For example, when the house was on fire, Jem and Scout were outside and they did not even notice that Boo put a blanket over them. Another example is also when he would put those little gifts in the tree like the watch , gum , pennies , and the girl and boy dolls carved out of soap. Additionally, he also saved their lives at the end at the book. When Bob tried to kill them with a knife; he fail and ended up dying. The police and Atticus were arguing about how he died because the knife was in his ribs. They all know Boo did it, but he was only trying to protect the kids and defend himself. Mr. Tate protects Boo by saying that Bob fell on his knife. They did not want to tell people about Boo because he is not really talkative. “Mr. Tate said putting him on trial would be a sin.” He is very shy and is in the dark most of his life, but he is caring. Even Scout said “Well, it'd be sort of like shootin' a mockingbird, wouldn't it?" So overall, Boo was innocent he really did not do anything wrong besides kill Bob, but that was done only to protect the kids. Boo never really bothered anyone, was quiet and always took care of the kids in their time of
Jem, Scout, and Heck Tate all know that Boo fell on his knife, but they still say that Bob fell on his knife. Heck Tate says about Boo, “‘If it were and other man it would be different But not this man, Mr. Finch’”(Lee 370). This shows Heck Tate is beginning to see what kind of person Boo actually is. They cover for him because they realize they killed him for the safety of the kids, not for a bad reason.
Many of the townsfolk viewed him as an evil or mean spirited person. An instance of him being a mockingbird is first seen when Boo begins to put things in the hole of a tree for Jem and Scout to have until it gets filled with cement (44-45). Another example is when Boo puts a blanket around Scout while she is watching the fire at Miss Maudie's house and Scout does not even notice (94-95). The last and biggest act takes place while Scout and Jem are walking home from the play and they are attacked by Bob Ewell. Then to save them Boo stabs Bob
The reason Boo was able to save them from being killed was because he could see well in the dark along with rushing to help as soon as he could even though he was not armed and Bob was. One quote in the book is where Mr. Tate says “Draggin’ him with his shy ways into the limelight-to me, that’s a sin.”(Lee 370) as he realizes bring Boo to testify what had occurred would be akin to shooting a mockingbird. Mr. Tate comes to this conclusion as bringing him to court would cause significant gossip and fame, which Boo has been avoiding and figures out that Boo only killed Bob out of kindness, and like a mockingbird all they do is help the community. That is why Boo is considered a mockingbird in this situation as he risks danger to protect two children and asks for nothing in
The mockingbird represents true goodness and innocence that should always be protected. Another character who shows loss of innocence is Tom Robinson. He is accused of raping Mayella Ewell but because of obvious evidence, he is innocent. In effect, he gets shot to death for being a kindhearted man who saw a girl in need of help and helped her with daily fixing’s around the house. He was an innocent man who had a family and a life, but that was destroyed because of the color of his skin.
The night that the kids get attacked by Bob Ewell, Boo does save them, but also kills Bob in order to do that. Heck Tate knows that Boo killed Bob, and he also knows that Boo didnt thnk killing Bob as a bad thing, but he knows that Boo’s inosence is
That's a sin.” Mr. Tate agree’s that coming forth about who really killed Mr. Ewell would do a great disjustice to Boo who just wants to stay out the limelight. Boo risked being in the center of attention to help Jem and Scout, which in my opinion, is one of the greatest acts of courage seen in the

The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a fictional piece which captures the fictional lives of a small county set in Alabama during the 1930s. The novel takes place in Maycomb County, and is through the eyes of the narrator, Jean Louise or also known as Scout.
Boo sees Scout and Jem as his children. Boo has watched the kids grow up over the years. He's sorta laid back and comes in with his “children” need him. At the beginning of the book Boo has already been characterized as someone he's not. More towards the middle he starts to show up more but still is out of everyone's way.
as you can see he is not very polite. Bob also splits in Atticus’s face after the trail. Bob says that he’ll get back at Atticus for the court case. The way that Bob gets back at Atticus is by trying to hurt his children. Bob breaks Jem’s arm, but then is killed by Boo Radley.
Now, there are many thoughts on Boo killing Bob. Some say it wasn’t him and some say that it was him. From all the evidence that we are given, it all points to Boo. Mr. Tate says that only someone who could see in the dark could have really done anything. Since Boo is always inside, he is more accustomed to the dark.
Because of his love for the kids he is able to push past all of his fears and possible complications that may come from it. Boo Radley patching up Jem’s pants, putting a blanket around
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the term mockingbird symbolizes innocence in a person. In the novel it focuses on the fact that innocence, represented by the mockingbird, can be wrongfully harmed. There are two characters: Tom Robinson and Arthur “Boo” Radley that are supposed to represent the mockingbird. In the novel, Tom Robinson is the best example of a mockingbird because he is prosecuted for a crime he did not commit. Also, he was judged unfairly based on the color of his skin in his trial.
Boo Radley is an adult who did stupid things as a teenager and as punishment was that his parents locked him in his house a form of punishment. This resulted in him becoming a reclose trapped inside of his home trying to hold on to any of the remaining innocence he has, however he to winds up losing it and he does this by going outside to help Jem and Scout by saving their lives from Bob Ewell the wife of Mayellea Ewell. Boo Radley looses his innocence by leaving his environment and losing this innocence that he once had and that his parents tried to preserve as said by Diane Talgun, “Boo Radley left his safe environment… Hence he is like a mockingbird and assail him with public notice would be comparable to destroy a defenseless songbird who gives only pleasure to others.” (Talgun, 295) He is a person, who gave things to the kids through the tree, and fixed thing for and his final gift he gave them their lives by saving them but this resulted him leaving a peaceful environment and introducing himself to the world once more thus losing his innocence.
The mockingbird in To Kill A Mockingbird is symbolic of innocence. Early in the novel, Atticus, the father tells the children Scout and Jem that it is a "sin to kill a mockingbird". Later Scout asks Miss Maudie what he meant by that because she has never heard her father say anything was a sin. Miss Maudie explains his reasoning by saying that all mockingbirds do is provide beautiful music. They do not harm anyone, they don't bother anyone, and they "sing their hearts out for us."
They conversed among themselves about the "monster",and the two boys even acted out Boo 's untrue history. They 've heard simply untrue rumors about Boo Radley, just like how I heard rumors about Mr. Cash. However, as they grew older and the story progressed towards the trial, Boo Radley was no longer on the minds of the children. But towards the end, Boo reemerges as hero that saves Jem and Scout. It was Boo Radley that stabbed Bob Ewell and protected the children from Bob 's murderous intents.
