In the poem, “Hurt,” Trent Reznor argues that glory can destroy people if they let it take over their life. He claims that when some is at their highest, they can fall from their “throne” and enter a long, remorseful, guilt trip. Reznor develops this claim by first using visual imagery to explain his pain so that his readers can get an idea of how he is hurting, physically and emotionally. Then, he uses a rhyming scheme to serve as a pause at the end of the lines to emphasize his point. And finally, his bleak diction expresses his mindset towards his life decisions.
