Ramanagaram, a princely state, (semi sovereign principality under British Raj) in the east shore of India existed since 1646. A prosperous state, cut out of broke down Vijayanagara Empire, it extended from Gopalpur to Machilipatnam, along the Bay of Bengal. A powerful ally of the British, Ramanagaram spread over one lakh sq. kms in area and endowed with seventy-five lakhs population. The state brought forth more than ten crore rupees annual income in early twentieth century. The British Crown granted status of twenty-one gun salutes to the state of Ramanagaram because of its vital and monetary significance. Just five other native states enjoyed such status in India.

“He lost his memory, wandered with sadhus in the Himalayas for quite a while and afterwards settled at Rishikesh. His memory returned in flashes and he decided to settle at Vijayanagaram as a sanyasi.” I found the story fascinating, cohesive and credible.

“ Why he is exposing his identity now? Why he selected Vijayanagaram to settle down ?” I inquired .

“The prevailing circumstances forced sanyasi to show his identity. He wanted to help us and stall the evil designs of William Foster. He settled at Vijayanagaram ,because he desired to die here, his place of birth. ” Mrinalini said.

“ The marks of tiger claw on his right arm and sores of syphilis are not visible on his body.” I asked.

“My brother and Dr Shivram planted a lie of syphilis to keep him aloof from us. The marks of tiger claw disappeared due to application of balms, herbs and oils by the tribals, while reviving him.”

“ How can we trust his version.”

“ Last night sanyasi sneaked into my bedroom and bolted the doors from inside.” Mrinalini said.
