On August 4th 1914 Britain declared war on Germany for violating Belgian neutrality. Australia as allies soon followed and sent troops who departed to Gallipoli in October 1914 along with troops from France, New Zealand and Britain. As the war continued the troops travelled to The Western front where 5,533 soldiers were seriously injured in only 24 hours, by the end of the year the list of casualties grew 40,000. In 1917, 76,836 soldiers were added to the list of casualties in battles in Bullecourt, Messines, and the four-month operation around Ypres, recognised as the battle of Passchendaele. For Australia, World War 1 remains the most damaging conflict in terms of deaths and casualties.
World War I Was one of the bloodiest wars ever. World War I was a war fought in Europe between Germany, Russia, France, Great Britain, and the United States and many others. World War I was ultimately started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. The indirect causes were more significant to the outbreak of WWI than any direct cause. There are several causes that forced Europe into the “Great War” such as militarism,alliance systems, imperialism,and militarism.
Some of those reasons include alliances, militarism, and imperialism. Alliances was one of the underlying causes of this war. Alliances are agreements between countries stating that they’ll help each other in time of need. For example, as shown in document A, the United Kingdom, France, and Russia all had an alliance with each other called the “triple entente”.
The underlying causes of the World War I were militarism, nationalism, and imperialism. Militarism, the glorification of the military, was one of the major causes of World war I. People thought that the military was important to civilians and should be respected and glorified. It was an arms race. The more one nation built its militaries, the more the other nations felt that they had to do the same. World War I was caused by the flawed alliance system between the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria, and Italy) and the Triple Entente (Britain, France, and Russia). The people’s nationalistic feelings fueled the war because they did not want their country’s image ruined. In Europe, the nations had an uneven division of colonies which caused a desire to weaken other countries through a world war.

Before it even started it had Tragic events that led up to it; The imperialism that was going on during that time caused tensions between nations, like Austria-Hungary demanding Serbia to take action and remove propaganda from their country, or the alliances that were formed at the start making the war unavoidable, for example, the two secret alliances that had high tensions from the start, And the high amount of militarism in Europe that led mobilizations of infantries around Europe and caused tensions to reach their limit.
