Who Is Chillingworth's Death In The Scarlet Letter

In The Scarlet Letter, a novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a young woman, named Hester Prynne, committed adultery due to her theory of her husband was dead. Hester was thrown in prison and given the letter “A” symbolising “adultery” which she has to wear on her bosom for the rest of her life. The narrator starts the novel with Hester’s trial on the scaffold after her time in prison. Then, the audience meets Roger Chillingworth, who is Hester’s husband from England. In the novel, Roger Chillingworth is the most villainous. The audience first engages with Roger Chillingworth in Chapter 4. Hester was awaiting in jail when she and her child, Pearl, became ill. The magistrates paid the Indians to hand over a physician which they had hostage for many years. This physician happened to be Roger Chillingworth. In this interview between Hester and Chillingworth, Hester begs for Chillingworth to give her a poison to kill her because she believes it will save her from the life she is awaiting. Chillingworth says no. “Live, therefore, and bear about thy doom with thee, in the eyes of men and women,- in the eyes of him whom thou didst call thy husband- in the eyes of yonder child!

Dimmesdale fell in love with Hester and is the father to her child, Pearl. For this, he punishes himself physically and mentally, which results in a heart condition. Dimmesdale is seen holding his heart in many scenes throughout the story. This is because of the guilt is eating him from the inside out. Arthur Dimmesdale is not villainous because he has done nothing wrong to Hester. All he wanted to do was making everything right for both Hester and Pearl, and himself. He also has done nothing wrong to anybody else.
