“There are two tragedies in life. One is to lose your heart's desire. The other is to gain it.” Said George Bernard Shaw, Man, and Superman. Romeo and Juliet is the story of two lovestruck teenagers who, through many unfortunate events, commit suicide. There is a character in Romeo and Juliet who is the main reason for their deaths. Friar Lawrence is my suspect because of three main reasons: marrying Romeo and Juliet, his plan, and correcting or revising the failed plan. First, the will to marry Romeo and Juliet was a problem. His intention was good, but this decision was a terrible mistake that would cause many hardships in the near future. According to the text, “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be, for this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households' rancor to pure love.” Shakespeare, Act 2, Scene 3, Lines 90–93 This proved to be his first mistake, thinking marrying them would end the feud between the Montague and the Capulets but cause the unfortunate event that would happen in Romeo and Juliet. …show more content…
His plan to pretend that Juliet was dead was poorly thought out because a small change changed the whole plan, which ended in failure. Friar Lawrence's plan was more likely to fail because Lord Capulet's changing the wedding date ended up knocking the plan out of course. By my brotherhood, the letter was not nice but full of charge, of dear import, and the neglecting it may do much danger,” Friar Lawrence cried when he learned Romeo had not received the letter (Shakespeare, Act 5, Scene 2, Lines 18–21). This shows that Romeo's not receiving the letter will ultimately cause his death and
the Friar gave Juliet a potion. The potion was going to put Juliet to sleep for 48 hours and it will look like she is dead, everyone will think she is dead but Friar Lawrence, he did not tell Romeo of his plan which was the biggest flaw in the plan. That is the biggest reason why Friar Lawrence is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and
Friar Lawrence was disappointed because the message never even made its way to Romeo. So, Friar’s plan is backfiring because that means Romeo really thinks that Juliet is dead. If Romeo got the message from Friar John then Romeo would not think that Juliet is actually dead and want to kill
The key reason that Friar Lawrence is at fault for the death of Romeo and Juliet is because he was the priest that married the young couple, and kept their unbreakable love a secret. They came to the priest asking for a life together and pure serenity, in which resulted in a catastrophic death. To support my claim, Friar Lawrence is the primary target because of the secrets he kept from everyone. Friar lawrence should have never agreed to marry Romeo and Juliet.
Friar Lawrence is to blame. Friar Lawrence is the cause for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because the one thing that he could have done to prevent any of this to happen was to not marry Romeo and Juliet in the first place. Yet, he believed that it would be a good idea to stop this feud between the two families, it still wasn’t the right thing to do. “Thy love did read by rote, that couldn’t spell. But, come, young waverer, come go with me.
However, Friar Lawrence bears the most blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet due to his involvement in their hasty marriage, his agreement to marry Juliet and Paris, and his ill-conceived plan of faking Juliet's death. When Romeo approaches Friar Lawrence to be married, the Friar willingly agrees to their union, despite the known tension between the feuding families:
Due to Friar Lawrence’s intervention throughout the play, he is to blame for the death of the two star-crossed lovers. Friar Lawrence is a prominent and frequently seen character throughout the play making him a prime suspect for the blame. The first example that shows the Friar is at fault for the death of Romeo and Juliet occurs early on in the play when Romeo goes to seek the Friar’s assistance. After meeting with Juliet and deciding they should marry, Romeo seeks Friar Lawrence in hopes of him marrying them. Friar Lawrence then decides to marry the two lovers, which is his first mistake.
That's why Romeo and Juliet decided to keep their love confidential. Nevertheless, the individual who contributed the greatest to their deaths is Friar Lawrence. He caused this catastrophe by getting involved as an advisor. Romeo and Juliet trusted him with their secrets, throughout their lives, and plays a significant role in bringing the two together. However, he made a hasty decision attempting to help Juliet avoid marrying Paris.
This partly because instead of telling the families that Romeo and Juliet were married when it happened he waited until after the were dead, which is apparent in Act 5, Scene 3 when he says, “Romeo, there dead, was husband to that Juliet, And she there dead, that’s Romeo’s faithful wife. I married them and their stol’n marriage-day Was Tybalt’s doomsday” (326) In the quote Friar Lawrence is essentially admitting to marrying them and that the same day they got married was the same day Tybalt died. The quote supports the statement that Friar Lawrence is partly responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, because if he had told the Capulets and Montagues earlier that Romeo and Juliet had married. Then some of the event’s such as Juliet drinking the potion that helped fake her death, may have been avoided.
Roby Flores Ms.Gustafson FUCP-008 2 May 2023 Which Characters’ Decisions Primarily Caused Romeo & Juliet's Death? Romeo & Juliet’s death came from their fatal flaws along with Friar Lawrence’s. Had the characters made different choices, they may have had their happily ever after. In Romeo & Juliet, these “Star-crossed Lovers” meet their tragic end because of their plethora of bad decisions and unhealthy mental state.
For this reason, Friar Lawrence should be held accountable for Romeo and Juliet's deaths because of his little planning. This bad planning from Friar Lawrence is one of the main reasons Romeo and Juliet’s love would end in
Roddy White Period:10 English 9 3 March 2023 In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet many characters are responsible for the tragic outcome, The friar, nurse, Romeo, and Juliet are all partly responsible, It is temporary to blame Balthasar, but he’s not at Romeo and Juliet was responsible for their own deaths, they are responsible for their own death because Romeo chose to drink the poison and Juliet chose to shoot herself. “Romeo. Romeo why do you have to be a Montague” this shows that Romeo and Juliet Friar Lawrence is also to blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.
Because Lord Capulet does not know about his daughter’s marriage to Romeo, he tries to force her to marry Paris. Juliet makes it clear that she would rather be dead than marry Paris. So, Friar Lawrence then devises a plan for Juliet to run away with Romeo. Therefore Friar Lawrence is largely to blame for the untimely deaths of Romeo and Juliet because his risky plan fails. The friar’s plan starts with Juliet taking a potion on Wednesday night that will make her look dead when the nurse tries to wake her in the morning.
One reason Friar Lawrence is to blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet, because he decided to marry the two. Romeo got into the mascarade party and met Juliet and instantly fell in love. Romeo climbed to Juliet’s balcony and decided to get married the following morning, but to do that they had too ask Friar Lawrence to marry them. Friar is shocked at the news, he proceeds to say “I will help you for just one reason”(Shakespeare II.iii.93).
William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet tells the story of two star-crossed lovers that come from feuding families and secretly get married, but ultimately meet their tragic end due to a series of devastating events. Some might blame Romeo for killing Tybalt which led to his banishment or the family feud for making it impossible for the couple to be together openly, which led to their secret marriage and their deaths. Others could point out that Juliet's parents controlling behavior led to her death. While all of those may have contributed to Romeo and Juliet’s deaths, ultimately the most blame for the tragic ending should go to Friar Lawrence because he abandoned Juliet in her time of need after her husband's death and he suggested a very dangerous plan to fake Juliet's death and risk her life, which led to the young couple’s deaths. Friar Lawrence bears the most responsibility for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet due to his abandonment of her after her husband’s sudden death.
Many characters contributed to the death of Romeo and Juliet although, Friar Lawrence is most at fault for the tragic death of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence made many careless mistakes that could have been avoided considering he knew the consequences. Friar Lawrence states to Romeo “These Violent delights have violent ends” (II. vi. 9-10). Friar Lawrence knew the dangers and potential consequences of marrying Romeo
