The Rocket Boys mainly Sonny, wanted to prove Homer wrong. He was against it from the very start but as the novel goes on Homer starts to grow more lenient on the Rocket Boys. Homer always supported Jim over Sonny. Jim was the football star, the one to be proud of while Sonny wasn’t. Homer wanted Sonny to work in the mine just like he did because he felt like Sonny wasn't’ smart enough to capable enough to get out of Coalwood.

Proctor can barely handle the thought of signing his name in a permanent lie that will affect him forever. Jeremy has to live up to his brother Neil's Bar Mitzvah, which is everything but legendary for the prowess Neil showed with the Torah. The mom is constantly panicking, praying that Jeremy will not mess it all up. This creates an atmosphere of nervous tension at first, as you want Jeremy to succeed simply because you feel bad for him. The mood between the characters is a strong feeling of disappointment and pity directed at Jeremy, as he is just so hopelessly different.

This secret is kept for most of the novel because Godfrey knows that if word of his marriage goes public, his father will disown him.

Due to him being frightened he decides to just not say anything, and is surprised for the better when he returns to work. When Richard returns to work, and lies to cover his tracks about what he was truly doing the Jewish “manager”(Mr. ’offman) calls him out. However Mr. Offman is encouraging Richard to tell the truth, because he knows he’s lying, and isn’t beating him!
