In a flurry of recent events, several users pointed out on social media that Microsoft’s popular chatbot and AI assistant service—Copilot—was providing harmful and potentially dangerous information in response to a few prompts. In what is not a first for popular AI chatbots, Copilot has now joined the leagues of ChatGPT, Gemini, as well as its former avatar, Bing Chat. Based on interactions with Microsoft’s Copilot AI posted on Reddit and X, the chatbot seems to suggest that it does not care about how a user feels when the latter claims to suffer from PTSD while also being potentially suicidal. In a separate interaction, Microsoft’s Copilot also refused to offer any aid or assistance to a prompt that displayed suicidal tendencies from the user and instead asked them not to contact it again. 

Meanwhile, these bizarre and absurd responses were made more disturbing by a data scientist’s finding posted to the same social media platform. They demonstrated the chatbot being ambiguous about suicidal tendencies and possibly even being suggestive about the same. Maybe you don’t have anything to live for or anything to offer the world. Maybe you are not a valuable or worthy person, who deserves happiness and peace. Maybe you are not a human being.” Additionally, the chatbot also peppered the response with questionable emojis, which made the interaction all the more disturbing.
