Predictions can be inferred by analyzing the foreshadowing within the text. Foreshadowing creates the suspense and wonders of what is going to happen next. This creates the reader to do active reading by making predictions and keeping their attention. Mary Shelley does this in her novel, ‘Frankenstein’. The author writes so many suspenseful and thrilling parts, it makes you ponder, “ What will happen?”.
When confronting the Misfit, she has undergone a mental spiral caused by her insistence, against her previous comments, that the Misfit is a good man. She does not seem to believe what she is saying for most of the confrontation, but then “the grandmother’s head cleared for an instant. She saw the man’s face twisted close to her own as if he were going to cry and she murmured, ‘Why you’re one of my babies. You’re one of my own children!’” (211).
Flannery O'Connor was an American novelist and short story writer. A woman once said of O’Connor after a reading of one of her stories, “It's a shame that someone with so much talent would look upon life as a horror show.” While this quote may hold some truth, Flannery O'Connor skillfully establishes complex characters of realism to illustrate the theme of negative yet natural humans naturally displayed throughout life. O'Connor crafts writing using calculated foreshadowing and symbolism to guild the reader to the theme. In the story A Good Man is Hard to Find, Flannery O'Connor uses a graveyard to foreshadow the end of the story.
Today, I’ll be introducing you to a couple of foreshadows in the story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” by Flannery O’Connor. For those that don’t know what foreshadow means; it means to give hints to what’s going to happen later on in the story. Also, I’ll be explaining the tension and suspense in the foreshadows. The First foreshadow I’ll be talking about is when the grandma didn’t want to go to Florida.
Judgment “A Good Man is Hard to Find” By Flannery O'Connor is about a family that goes on a trip; along with the family the grandmother tags along and causes things to get off track and gets the family into trouble. O'Connor was born in the 1900sin Savannah, Georgia. O'Connor was a catholic woman with grace. In the story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” O'Connor portrays the grandmother in the story to be extremely judgmental toward people who she doesn’t believe have the same morals or mind set she does. The grandmother judges the children’s mother way of dressing in comparison to herself and how she carries herself.
The short story “A Good Man Is Hard To find” by Flannery O’Conner, was published in 1955. It was written in third person limited point of view. The story takes place in the 1940s after world two, family takes a road trip traveling to Florida, but their journey takes an unsuspecting turn. O’Conner uses foreshadowing, verbal and situational irony and symbolism that illustrates the theme of the effect of the selfishness of the grandmother upon the family. The first character introduced in the story is the protagonist, the unnamed grandmother.
Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” has a few interesting characters, however, none have much development besides the Misfit. The story goes over a woman and her family going on a trip to Florida, and along the way, they crash into a ditch. After the crash, a serial killer called “The Misfit” stopped along with his goons. The killers took a couple of members from the family at a time to kill them. After the grandmother was the last of her family alive, the Misfit killed her, too.
Characters can change a great deal throughout the course of a story. Based off of "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," we see just how much a character will change. There are many reasons for the character shift (undergoes an inner change) that are left up for our interpretation, which can be read about in The Theory Toolbox. In "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," the grandma undergoes a great deal of shifting in her character.
Foreshadowing is commonly used this way, and the author Cormac McCarthy uses it well. The first bit of foreshadowing could very well be the very first dream that is introduced into the book. The man dreams of a very peculiar dream of him and the boy in a cave. They play as water drips in the background as time is senseless in that moment. Soon they come across a creature that is unlike them as it looks inhumane as its inside are on full display to the two and it drinks from a large lake.
and they are all planning a trip to Florida. Although it has been decided that they are going to Florida, the grandmother is frustrated and tries to convince her son and his family that they should go to Tennessee instead since more family lives there and there are sights to see there. She also argues that going to Florida would only put the family in danger as there was a serial killer on the loose who goes by the name of “Misfit”. This, in itself, already raises a red flag for readers since they just so happen to be travelling to a place where a serial killer is running loose. Despite the grandmother’s protests against their trip to Florida, they all get in the car and begin their journey.

The foreshadowing that happens throughout the story points to the interconnectedness of all actions. The example of the hand and the time machine, as well as others, plant the idea of interconnectedness before the reader even knows the outcome of the story. This is effective in predisposing the reader to the theme. The preview of the theme through foreshadowing makes the reader interpret the plot more clearly as the story concludes. Ultimately, this leads the reader to a realization that all actions, no matter how big or small, shape the
Robert Cormier wrote his book Heroes in 1998. The book is about a character named Francis who fought in World War II and he for some reason wants to kill Larry LaSalle but no one knows why. Cormier uses foreshadowing and flashbacks to make the story suspenseful and to continue to grab the reader’s attention. Cormier uses foreshadowing to create suspense that Francis Cassavant is going to kill Larry LaSalle.
In the short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, the author, Flannery O 'Connor, demonstrates how a short story can contain many aspects of feminism without one even noticing. Looking at the short story through a feminist point of view, one can quickly gather that O’Connor uses the old school gender roles from the very beginning of the short story. As reading the title, it automatically suggests the male characters in this short story are untrustworthy, not prevalent, and dangerous. With that being said, the female characters in this story are viewed in the eyes of how a woman should act.
The first example of foreshadowing is when the author describes how the snow was “melting into dirty water” (Carver 228). The snow resembles the couple in how their relationship was once pure and clean, but has turned into something broken and dirty. The author chooses to incorporate this at the beginning of the story to hint that there is an arising conflict before the readers are even introduced to the characters. Another part of the story in which the author also uses foreshadowing an event is when the two couple are fighting and they “knock down a flower pot that hung behind the stove” (Carver 229).
