We’re quite particular about those with whom we break bread.” (Foster, 9) Through the breaking of bread, or in this case the laborious cleaning, cooking, and finally the eating of chitlins is representative of a communion, between the almost sacred bonds between a mother and her daughter. Throughout the exposition of the short story, we constantly see that the other members of her family reject the chitlins for being “country” or smelling strange.

In this case, the boy might see his mother as an enforcer figure standing on his way of being free. His attitude in a way alludes to Bertrand Russell’s ideas. Also in an ideal sense the boy should have done the dishes, cared for his siblings and also given the money to his family for support. But he doesn’t do any of those and instead he spends the money for something that makes him feel free and happy. Bertrand Russell turned against idealism, which regarded individuals as social beings.

“A Wall of Fire Rising” is a short story about a young and underprivileged family trying their best to survive in Haiti. The husband, Guy, struggles to find work to help contribute to the family’s demands and feels as if he has failed as a man to his wife, Lili, and as a father to their son, Little Guy. While reading this story one might make the assumption that Lili didn’t truly appreciate her husband, but the author includes some suggestions that better help the reader come to the conclusion that she does in fact appreciate her husband and maybe its Guy who doesn’t recognize his own efforts. The author shows the person reading Lili’s gratitude for Guy through her affection she still has for him and reassurance in a wife’s comforting words.
Maya Angelo once said that her mission in life was not to merely survive but to thrive and to do so with some passion, compassion, humor and style. I am certain that I feel the same way when it comes to how I live my life. No one is perfect but we are all simply individuals trying to find our way for achieving happiness and serenity for ourselves. Now I am no Maya Angelo which is why I am writing this so that you will know something about who I am, Darretta Burgess. I believe I relate to everyone in some type of way, some more than others, whether it’s because of past experiences, goals for my future or present circumstances.
While Nya is walking to the pond to get water, her mother is taking care of the younger children and cooking. When Nya returns from her morning trip to the pond, her mother is waiting for her with a meal. Linda Sue Park illustrates this on page 20, “Nya’s mother took the plastic container from her… she handed Nya a bowl of sorghum meal and poured a little milk over it.” In Nya’s family, each member must work hard at their own job to help the family along. Mother’s meal helps Nya to have the strength to make her second trip of the day to the pond and back to get the water that they all need to survive.

Chimamanda uses some very specific rhetorical techniques to try and shed light on a problem that she sees that needs to be fixed. Her Audience is the everyone of all ages, but more specifically to white Americans.
1. Single stories are stereotypes that are based off of one perspective of a group of people. Single stories are built upon each other and define people;however, single stories aren't always true. There is a saying "don't judge a book by its cover". However, people of all generations are very judgmental.
In a family there are many different roles; there's the role of the mother, the father, the child, the grandparents, then there’s the brothers and sisters. Every single one of those roles has different responsibilities. The father, according to most of society, is supposed to be the breadwinner for the family. However, nowadays the mother is actually quite capable of being the breadwinner just as much of as the father. As they work to show their children what it is to be an adult they are teaching them as well on how to be an active member of society.
Before she met her, Adichie’s roommate, felt enormous pity for her and did not believe the two of them could be similar in any way simply because she was African. Adichie questions how things would have been different on their first encounter had her roommate heard of all the positive influential people making a difference in Nigeria. The undeniable truth is, a single story has the power to both deprive and empower people. In “The Danger of a Single Story”, Adichie captivates her audience and convinces them that many stories matter.
At an official Ted conference in 2009, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gave a TEDGlobal talk addressing the dangers of a single story. Adichie was a Nigerian novelist who came to America around the age of nineteen. Since then, she has understood what is like to be defined by a single story. She faced constant misconceptions of what it means to be an African. Because they didn 't understand that Africa was a place of many cultures and many ways of life, Americans treated her as the poor, starving African they saw on television.
The speech talks as well about the issue of power that is closely connected to the construction of the single story. The stories have been used to expropriate and label, but can also be used to empower and humanize. Accordingly, Adichie says, many stories matter, but we cannot know every story. However, we are
The story “Yours” by Mary Robinson is a short story about a married couple spending their Halloween evening together before the death of his young wife. His wife was suffering from cancer. The story starts with Allison, the wife, coming in from getting pumpkins for the evening events with her husband. She walks through their home where she finds the mail. She finds a letter from her husband’s relatives who saying awful things.

A single story is created when the same discourse is being repeated over an over again in books, TV shows or in the news. The single story creates a stereotypical, one sided perception of a group of people. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie tells a story about how she, came to believe a single story in her childhood. When she was a child she read many American and English books, about people, with whom she had very little in common.
