Abortion through a Feminist Ethics Lens
Introduction
Abortion stands out as one of the most controversial topics in world debates today. This is because of the many different views that each interested parties take on the subject. An example of a perspective that has been used to look into the issue of abortion is the feminist and non-feminist view of the legalization of abortion. These two groups do have different stands concerning abortion especially with relation to ethics and moral standards of the society. This essay is meant to present the ideas brought out by Susan Sherwin in her article ‘Abortion through a feminist ethics lens’. The essay will focus on the summary of key issues in the passage as well as an explanation how her ideas connect with the central theme of the paper. The main point of focus in this case is to realize that feminist way of looking at issues of abortion bears very many differences to the non-feminist views.

The factors that advocate for the central point of arguments for these two groups is the plight of the expectant woman and that of the fetus. While the feminists look at the plight of the expectant woman as key in making decisions on abortions, the non-feminists see the fetus as the central point of consideration. Sherwin tends to bring out the feminists perspective that states that the expectant woman is in a good position to state whether abortion is the best move for her circumstances because she has the ability to weigh all the relevant factors. Therefore, Sherwin says that the feminist point of view should be considered because it does not limit the discussion to issues of legal and moral acceptability but stretches to others issues like
Though Barbara Hewson thoroughly demonstrates skill and knowledge in the subject of abortion, she takes the subject of many conflicts and turns it into a mess of unpersuasive words. The development of her stance on this subject shows no growth, and although she demonstrated the use of ethos, her article seems to endlessly cover the same information she had already delivered. Her use of logos and pathos is lacking, and what little use of ethos she has gives the reader only basic knowledge, and does not seem to help deliver her point. Hewson’s intended audience, based on her writing, is people of higher educational levels, or rather, those working on higher education in medical fields. Her lack of usage in basic Aristotelian rhetoric resulted
Before the Supreme Court case that changed lives forever, there were many women that went back behind their husbands or their parents to have an abortion on the account of rape or incest. They gave abortions in an interesting way long with the risk of being disowned forever and tried for a cause of illegal abortions. In the 1960’s women were not allowed to walk into an abortion clinic or doctor’s office and get an abortion. “There was no federal law regulating abortions, and many states had banned the practice entirely, except when the life of the mother was endangered.”
Part A: In today’s society there are many mixed feelings about abortion, many are pro for it and many are against it, some of the actions for this are because of their religion, social opinions, and political view on this situation. Firstly, religion, there are many different perspectives for each religion. Especially on harsh topics such as abortion. Such as Buddhism, which allows for abortion in certain circumstances such as if the child will be born retarded or if it will be too difficult for the parents later on when the child is born.
What should the women do that would best fit her and her future. This debate has come to be known as Pro-Life vs Pro-Choice. These terms meaning; pro-life is meaning that the government has the obligation in preserving or protecting a life no matter what, pro-choice is saying that it should not be left up to the government, but up to the pregnant individual. Terms or phrases that will be mentioned in this paper quite a bit that as a reader may like to know to better understand the subject and the view point are things like; abortion, open-adoption, and closed-adoption. Abortion by its dictionary meaning is the deliberate termination of a human
Women’s rights have been a long struggle in America’s legal system, as well as in the religious world, for many decades and women continue to have challenges, concerns, and struggles today. Fighting for what is best for their bodies such as a woman’s right to contraceptives to control whether she will get pregnant or not was not ideal for religious and personal reasons but would find a worthy advocate in a woman who would dedicate her life for women’s reproductive rights. The right for a woman to have an abortion became a legal battle that went all the way to the Supreme Courts in a very well-known case. It has always been a double standard in what was right and wrong, moral or immoral, towards women than men. A man was looked at with respect
Rosalind Hursthouse in her paper Virtue Theory and Abortion, handles with the moral standpoint of abortion from a virtue ethics perspective. Her research is directed towards investigating whether or not an abortion is something a virtuous person would do. Hursthouse examines the morally relevant considerations and in so doing, she rejects the standard questions used to determine the morality of an abortion such as the status of the fetus, and the rights of a women. The morally relevant considerations she sees fit to assess the moral legitimacy of an abortion are concerns with family relationship, personal circumstance, and basic biological facts. Through her considerations, Hurthouses account of virtue ethics gives us adequate moral advice in regards to the question of abortion.
Argumentative Analysis of Abortion Rights Abortion is a controversial topic and people have debated between “Pro-Choice”, a woman’s right to choose, as well as “Pro-Life”, strictly anti-abortion, for decades. For Abortion Rights Action Week, a Harvard College newspaper printed an opinion-based article by Tanya Luhrmann called, The Pro-Choice Argument. She claims that a priceless part of a human life is experiencing motherhood. Based on Luhrmann’s research, she presents a strongly reasoned argument between “Pro-Choice” and “Pro-Life”, and how the perspectives of both sides affects the irreplaceable relationship of a mother and child.
In “A Defense of Abortion,” Judith Thomson argues with a unique approach regarding the topic of abortion. For the purpose of the argument, Thomas agrees to go against her belief and constructs an argument based on the idea that the fetus is a person at conception. She then formulates her arguments concerning that the right to life is not an absolute right. There are certain situations where abortion is morally permissible. She believes that the fetus’s right to life does not outweigh the right for the woman to control what happens to her own body.
Abortion is one of the most controversial topics of all times. There are two types of abortion, Spontaneous which takes place naturally and induced which this essay will mainly present. Induced abortion is defined by the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. I believe that abortion should be legalised and accepted in all countries for different reasons such as; it 's cruel for raped women to go through with pregnancy, The mother has the right to choose for herself as it is her body not anyone else’s, a young girl is not ready for the responsibilities of womanhood and finally the health of the woman is more important.
Doris Gudino Professor Chounlamountry Political Science 1 27 July 2015 Pro-Choice Anyone? A woman has, undoubtedly, the freedom to procreate, but once a woman chooses to retreat from that freedom, a commotion arises. Abortion is a woman’s choice for many reasons. It’s her body, therefore, no one else can decide for said person.
In reflection to the readings, there are many arguments that are for or against abortion. Is abortion ever justified? In feminism point of view, Susan Sherwin believes, yes, abortion is justified because it focuses on woman’s right to abortion in a liberal aspect. She also believes that woman’s right that pregnant woman are the best judge when to considering to abort the fetus. That means, the autonomy is shifted to the woman.
The procedure of an abortion does more good for the mother and family than it prevents a life from occurring. The mother’s body should be respected, as it always should be. The mother’s life should always be put in priority. When rape is placed into the world of possibility behind pregnancy then a woman should always be helped during a traumatic event such as a rape. Even the idea of monetary struggles of families should be observed.
Abortion has been a controversial issue in our society. The options are which path to take in life. The two paths we have to take or to choose from are give the child a chance to live or to be a teenage parent or having an abortion. In the young age of a pregnant women will be the hardest part of her life and when she doesn’t think that she can deal with the fact that she will having a child in young age the only way that she will take would be to get an abortion. The fetus will be decide to abort by their mother resulting in or caused by its death.
For example, finds out whether continuing or terminating a pregnancy cause greater physical or psychological harms and risks to the mother. On the other hand, Bonevski & Adams (2001) further added that abortion may expose the mother to grief and regret. As such, it is important to gain mother’s consent before making the decision. Apart from that, in resolving slightly similar case study of 18 years old student was referred in view of her request for termination of pregnancy. She was gang-raped and found out she is pregnant.
